On top of breach has

1940 (year I presume)


Mod 98 on left hand side

and 655 stamped 3 times on the right side in front of the bolt.

5901C = Serial number, 25091st rifle made that year. Or is it 35901st? I don't recall if they had a series without letter suffix.
Mod 98 = Model 98 rifle.
42 = Mauser factory production code.
1940 = year made.
655 = Waffenampt (German weapons procurement office for the area) code.
