Pass the Colors

This is truly one of the most awe-inspiring drawings that I have seen pertaining to the 9/11 disaster. It captures the emotion of the tragedy, and the pride and determination of the US Armed Forces and our other heroes in uniform. This drawing literally embodies what America stands for.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Acknowledgment Controversy:

Although this has been signed by the author, you cannot decipher the signature clearly. This image was sent to us by one of our many visitors, and we believe that we have located the true source of this American masterpiece. (See below)

According to the artist's former spouse, this is the artwork Mark A. Conroy, retired Gunnery Sergeant (E-7), USMC.

Mark enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Beirut, and finished his 21 years in the Marine Corps after serving in the Gulf War at the rank of E-7. He was a machine gunner in Vietnam (first tour with the infantry, second as the door gunner on a helicopter). He was an interrogator-translator in Beirut (Arabic linguist), and was there when our barracks were bombed. He has 4 purple hearts, a Bronze Star with 'V', the Distinguished Flying Cross, and a chest full of other medals

If you look closely and check the signature in the bottom right corner, you will see it actually says 'Conroy' (and not 'Grier', as has been claimed by the letter below). Admittedly, the 'C' and the first 'o' look sort of like a 'G' and 'a', but that is because of the background shading of the rock behind his signature. I assure you that I would recognize Mark's style and signature anywhere, not to mention his printing of the title 'I'll take it from here', in the upper left of the picture. But it is the capital 'C' and the 'roy' of his signature that is the dead giveaway that this is his work - especially the 'y', and the way the tail of it curves towards the 'r'. He signed all of his pieces in this manner.

The following attribution is the most common being circulated on the Net, but we believe that the true author of this inspiring artwork is as described above.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. President,

I am a Guidance Counselor at Madison High School in Madison, Ohio. One of our teachers had an idea for a logo for Operation "Enduring Freedom". He asked our Art teacher, Jeff Grier to draw it up for him. I have attached his beautiful work for you. They have given their permission for use of this artwork as you see fit. Good luck and God Speed with your duties sir. If you want the original of this "logo" we would be happy to forward it to you.

Respectfully submitted,

Larry N. Baptie
Chardon, Ohio

Still yet another visitor has submitted that this drawing is attributed to a man named Nick Piciolo in a trade magazine, EMB, June 2002.

Somebody posted this on TFL awhile back. I printed it out and its been on the war room wall ever since. Excellant. IIRC, it was said TFL'er that drew it, forget who.
