OK, was looking at new rifles today..was originally looking at a .223 for coyote....However, I was really taken by a Savage 12VS (? IIRC), in .22-250

Now my question is this, because of the "barrel nut" mechanism, I would think that it would be a DIY job to convert this to another caliber (say .308), because the boltface is the same...Obviously need a set of head space gauges, but should be no big deal, right?

AND, if I got a new bolt with a different bolt face, I could even use a caliber with a different size base (although this might make it a single shot, because they may not feed from the magazine...is this also correct?

Thanks in advance for any info!

I've read the procedure several times and it certainly looks like a DIY job. There was even a magazine article in the past 3-4 years telling you exactly how to go about it. IIRC, you don't even have to change the entire bolt, I think you can change the bolt "head". Don't quote me on that though, I may be thinking about another gun.

I almost purchased a Savage 30-06 a few years ago to turn into a 35Whelen.
