Is this such an extreme issue in the rest of the country?

Can't remember the last time I was asked for ID for anything other than a financial transaction.
I'm also paying $3.07 per pack here in Virgina.
What's your going rate?

Pick N' Save now has a policy in their liquor department requiring that everyone, regardless of age, show id. I'm 52 and haven't been "carded" in decades. Now, though, it's almost kind of flattering. ;)
Mike, $3.07 for name brands? That's cheap. Around here they're over $40, which is why I buy my cigs online at yesmoke.com. $16.95 a carton including shipping for Marlboro Lights.
And I'll bet you a pack that this thread gets shut down before someone else can post. :D

This is kinda interesting, as I don't know what has been happening in the rest of the US over this bogus smoking issue.
Here, in Idaho, a merchant has to go to what I consider extreme lengths to protect him/herself. Under the law and regulations, no one under 18 may sell tobacco or tabacco products. All tobacco products must be locked up and the customer may not serve themselves. The state can and does set up legalized sting operations to test the checkers in stores. Should you sell a tobacco product to this undercover teen, the person will walk outside to the detectives car, hand over the tobacco product; the officer will come into the store and cite the offending checker.
The fine for a first offense is $100, payable within 7 seven days. This is not a ticket or a summons. It is an administrative fine. The store itself is also fined.
The fine is progressive for each infraction and stays on your and the stores record for 4 years.
It takes me about 20 minutes to train each checker on their duties and responsibilites under this set of laws and regulations. I have a form that they must initial and sign for each of the instructions (about 12 different areas are covered) before they can begin their job. This training is mandated by law. Failure to have such a training program is grounds to cancel the stores tobacco license.
All underage checkers must call an adult in order to process anyone who wants cigarettes. We have included alcohol in this, just to be safe. Four years ago, before this BS went into effect, it never much mattered, even though the law said they have to be 19 in order to sell beer or wine. Checkers in Grocery stores sold both alcohol and tobacco to those entitled to buy it.
Now, we must by law ID everyone who appears to be of age 27 or less, before they can purchase. In order to protect the checkers and my store, I simply tell all of our checkers to ID everyone who appears to be less than 30 years old.
I can think of several rights being violated here. But until someone takes this to the Idaho Supreme Court.....
Mike, Name brand cigarettes are $3.69 here. And due to go up, if the legislature passes the newest round of tax increases.

the weird thing is that you will get asked for ID for tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and firearms... but you won't get asked for ID to get condoms. :scrutiny:

Oh well, I do owe Mike a pack. If you want it, Mike, PM me.
Al Norris, your state's laws and mine are the same. Geeziz, you'd think folks were trying to buy heroin or something.

Geez, the're not this bad on alcohol, and I'd venture a bet that alcohol causes more damage than tobacco....any day of the week!

Marlboros, Western Montana: $2.69 a pack.
But, like our neighbors in Idyho, that probably will change drastically soon.

... was an adult bookstore in Chicago, on liberty weekend from basic at Great Mistakes. One of the guys from my company had never been in an "adult establishment", so we wandered over to one. Guy asked us for ID, we handed him our military cards, he told us we'd have to leave: "must be 21 to enter". 18 is the age of consent, at which point you can serve your country, incur debt, and engage in consensual sex (and have pictures taken of you doing it). But you have to be 21 to look at pornography! Guess nude models under 21 aren't allowed to see the proofs... ;)
As for tobacco: I roll my own. A tin costs about $15, and lasts anywhere from a week to a month (depending on stress level)...

One thing: the stupid "no-tolerance, we ID everyone" policies are often company policies. AFAIK, there are no laws anywhere that state that everyone must be IDed to sell beer or tobacco. Stores, needing a nice, no-brainer policy for minimum-wage employees, are the ones saying that 98 year old women must produce IDs before they can buy smokes.

Coronach, that may be true where you are from. But here, it's Idaho law...as regulated by the Dept. of Health and Welfare. They are the designated enforcers!
Now does it make sense?

There are only two ages: the age at which you are insulted to be carded, and the age at which you are flattered to be carded.

I wonder what the State's response would be if a large chain of stores decided to not even go through the tobacco license ringamarole and just not sell tobacco products. Imagine the howling and wailing over the lost tax revenue.

Much as I sympathize with my fellow smokers over the costs involved, I have to reluctantly point out that this topic is not gun related, has little to do with politics, and isn't really legally focused either. I'm afraid it must be extinguished... :(

This should prove to be as big a boon to organized crime as were Prohibition and the War on Drugs. :scrutiny:

Yeah, Preacherman already locked the thread, but I went to the bother of looking it up, so darnit, I'm going to post the results.
The Idaho Code does not require mandatory carding of all individuals attempting to purchase tobacco. The code does, however, state that if a minor attempts to purchase tobacco and is not carded, several penalties apply to the vendor.
Translation: if someone who could possibly be under 18 asks for smokes, you should card them. OTOH, if somone who is obviously older than 18 years of age asks for smokes, there is no need to card them.
Stores have stupid "we ID" policies because blanket policies are far easier to manage than discretion. And thats on them.
Anyway, the thread is closed.
Mike
