Store clerk killed after cooperating
By PEGGY O'HARE
Houston Chronicle
A convenience store clerk did what he was told by a gunman who
confronted him inside the north Houston business late Friday but was fatally shot before the cash register could even be opened, police said.
Surveillance video shows the unidentified gunman was calm and at ease when he shot and killed Jaswinder Singh, 51, inside the Diamond Shamrock-Stop N Go store at 1503 Gears Road.
The gunman entered the store by himself around 11:45 p.m. and demanded money. Before Singh could react, the gunman shot him in the chest.
The gunman then demanded that the clerk, who was dying on the floor, show him how to open the register. Realizing he could not open it, the gunman grabbed the electronic cash register, pulled it from the counter and casually left the store, police said.
Minutes later, a customer found the wounded clerk and called 911. Singh, of the 10800 block of Legacy Park in Houston, later died.
The gunman in the surveillance video is described as a white man in his mid-30s about 5 feet, 8 inches tall.
Anyone who may have information on the gunman's identity is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS or the Houston Police Homicide Division at 713-308-3674.
Singh's death marked the 48th homicide in Houston this year.

He'll get a shot to help him overcome his habit, and the state will even pay for it! :fire:
Sorry about the clerk.... :(

That's too bad about the clerk. Working a C-store is one of the most dangerous jobs out there.
When I started college, I was a clerk in a c-store near Gary, IN ( ), and every time I worked nights, I had my P230 with me. There were some pretty freaky-looking people in there. Thankfully, I was never robbed, but the store was robbed twice, both early in the morning. Bad job and even worse place to be doing it.

I've been in two confrontations at the same convenience store in Beverly... they seem to attract trouble like moths to a flame. And all I want is a full tank of gas. Sometimes I've been tempted to take the graveyard shift there just to be an armed presence. I am sympathetic to the clerks who work there, without a doubt. I still wonder about the fellow who works days, though, with the fanny pack and the NRA sticker on his car. I hope that pack contains what I think it does.

Having 'Singh' as a last name means the clerk was probably a Sikh.
Which means he was probably wearing a turban.
A white male, in his mid-30's, who was calm and at ease before and during the shooting does not fit the typical convenience store 'stop-and-rob' suspect.
I'll be interested to see how this one plays out.

According to FBI stats presented on a TLC or Discovery show about crime, about 13% of those that are robbed or are witnesses present during a robbery will still be injured or killed by the bad guy(s) after complying. Personally, I think those odds suck and so I would be more inclined to take some sort of action if possible rather than to comply without thought.
America's Most Wanted has repeatedly shown store videos from all over the country where clerks or customers are injured or killed (usually by shooting) AFTER complying. I don't particularly like the sensationalized aspect of the show where all bad guys are said to be 'cowards' and everyone else as victims or heroes, but the show does present quite a bit of real life events via actual security cameras and there is a lot to be learned from the video itself, even with the sound turned down on the TV.

Makes one reconsider the idea that the appropriate course for an armed robbery is to comply, doesn't it?
I wonder what the percentages are for those that interrupt an armed robbery by pulling a gun?

Besides, he didn't really mean to shoot the guy. He was just carrying one of those evil guns and it slipped and shot the guy. They need to make a rule that robbers either can't carry guns or if they do the guns need to have trigger locks. Duh.

The "stop n' robs" as Kaylee calls them; are dangerous.
The whole MMM mantra of "Give them what they want and they will go away" obviously didn't work. But of course, that won't make them change their tunes...
and of course, blaming the CRIMINAL MURDER isn't the solution, after all, he was just a victim of misunderstanding... It's really the gun... no, really... it's the gun. You put a gun in Pope John Paul's hands and he would rob a store too..
:barf:
Blame the innanimate object; not the criminal..
If I owned a stop n' rob, I'd have all my employees OPEN CARRY inside the store.
