Just got a letter from the NRA with an offer to upgrade my membership to Endowment status for $175. I hate to sound like i'm asking "what's in it for me?" but are there any advantages to this versus just sending them some extra money every year?

I did it - the advantage is that the NRA gets more money, which is a good thing. You get a neat patch and sticker and certificate! :D

I do not automatically give anyone or group money. I make them all show me they are worth my membership each year before renewing. If a policy is put into effect I do not like I do not have to renew my membership.
The NRA is not the only organization of its kind.
They are doing pretty good so far.

A knife AND a hat. They also gave me a hat. The knife's in the car and the hat's on the shelf. :D

They have many different endowment funds. Ask them to send you a list so you may choose the specific one you wish to support.

As for should you? Yes. By picking your endowment you have more control over your dontation than just a "donation".

"I make them all show me they are worth my membership each year before renewing."

Life Members (and Endowment, Patron, etc.) don't have to renew - ever. We are allowed to vote and complain. :)
