"Makes major" means has a power factor (bullet weight in grains times muzzle velocity in fps divided by 1000 for convenience) of at least 165 to get Major Power Factor scoring which is an advantage in IPSC-USPSA competition. A 200 grain .45 SWC at 825+ fps was the old formula, these days it is more often a 180 gr .40 at 917+ or a 125 gr .38 Super at 1320+ fps.

Actually, the "old formula" might have been more like a 200 grain SWC at 875 fps to make the OLD major power factor of 175. :D

I shot a match with a 44 using 240 JHPs at 1275 fps for a 306 power factor. Jokingly asked the MD if I could declare minor and just shoot the papers once for the two hits! :D :D Oh, by the way, it did have a couple interesting moments: 1) Finding out that there was a standard exercise classifier, requiring three strings -- freestyle, strong-hand only, and weak-hand only. (Never considered shooting 44 Mag weak-handed. Not one of my better ideas.) 2) Shooting from inside a plywood tunnel/box -- didn't get the muzzle clear of the end of the box before engaging :( -- "If you're finished, unload, show clear." "WHAT??!! I FURNISHED THE ROAD SHOW BEER?" :D
