Proposed SF gun ban author: I would turn in a neighbor who owned a handgun

This morning the local NPR affiliate KQED did an hour long forum on San Francisco's proposition H to ban handguns in the city. They had Chris Daly, city supervisor and the proposition's author, a retired police lieutentant in opposition, and a UC Berkeley law professor for legal perspective. The pro-gun speaker hit all the main points, though I wish he would have spoke more about the impact for non-police. At the end of the show, someone asked a brilliantly revealing question about how Daly would handle his neighbors, to which Daly answered he would a) support the arrest of peacable gun-owners who resisted the ban, and b) would be willing to call the police and denounce a neighbor he thought owned a gun. I was stunned.
In an hour long radio segment they couldn't find a single caller who supported the proposition. In San Francisco! The anti-gun law professor they had as a guest said it was clearly a violation of the state preemption law. There was even a professed Green party member who called in to voice his opposition. Chris Daly said he thinks there's a silent majority who support the ban -- I suspect he's going to be rudely disabused of his gun ban fantasy next week.

The Nazis relied on upstanding "good citizens" like Chris Daly who tipped them off to "criminals" secretly hiding in attics and basements in violation of the law.

I'm starting to think this could be a win-win situation, thanks to the sloppy work they did on the proposition. If it gets voted down, that sends a great message. If it is passed, but is subsequently overturned (after costing SF taxpayers a bundle) that's another black eye for SF's ruling elite.

I'm keeping a good eye on what happens in SF in the next week. It is going to determine how I vote on the gay marriage ban in TX.
If gay people decide to trash the rights of gunowners in their city. I will trash gay rights in all of TX. Turnabout is fair play.
If they come to their senses and reject that gun grabbing nonsense I will do the right thing and vote against the gay marriage ban. Govt should butt out of people's private lives (and gun safes).

Wow, I hope his neighbors didn't hear it! It would be so nice to know that you've got a neighbor ready to call the cops on you.
Boofus, there are a lot of pro-gun gays in SF. The Dems and gun-banners try to pretend they aren't there but they are.

Boofus, I didn't know sexual preference was tied to caliber.
Personally, I don't care about gay marriage one way or the other, but I think it would be nice for two gay married men getting a divorce to appear before JUDGE CAROLYN WHITTINGTON in St. Louis Kounty, Missouri. Her head would explode, since she wouldn't know which man to ream...

I don't care 1 way or another about gay marriage or abortion either. Which is why leftists should be bending over backwards to convince me that they aren't my enemy.
I'm the kind of voter the dimocrats need to persuade to win the numbers game in 2006 and 2008. But so far their "Hilary will take things away from you for the common good-Gun control-tax increase-flee from Iraq-appease terrorists-Turn in your neighbor" platform isn't working.

Reminds me of 1984. Anyone else remember the man who was proud that his little girl turned him into the government, denouncing her own Father as a traitor for allegedly saying bad things in his sleep?

Seems almost an apt irony - the name Daly.
Guess he has family in Chicago!!!

The councilman would squeal on a neighbor NOT FOR DOING SOMETHING
but just for owning something. This is the fallacy of gun control: anything
you can do wrong with a gun is already against the law. Gun control
violates the civil rights of the lawabiding and wastes law enforcement
resources by going after peaceful citizens. Oh, some one has already
invoked Godwin's law by mentioning the Nazis. Well, I hope the San
Francisco Pink Pistols show up on Chris Daly's doorstep with
.69 caliber Howdah guns and dare him to out them.

Boofus, blaming and punishing Texas gays for something ALL San Francisans do is about as bigoted and stupid a position as has ever been flaunted on THR.
San Francisco's gay population is still a minority of the town! Granted, a BIG minority but still, if this turkey passes, the gays alone won't be at fault and might not even be more in favor than the general population (by percentages of each).

imho, gay marriage is the only issue that keeps a lot of gays in the democratic party.
As P.J. O'Rourke observed, if you let gays get married, soon they'll be having children, going to church, boycotting HBO, advocating school vouchers and voting Republican.

Guys - not my forum to mod - but please resist the comments re gay aspects and let the main topic predominate. It's too easy for things to go downhill else! ;)

Would this guy turn in his neighbors for owning marijuana? Or an illegal alien for being in the US?
Or is he just being hypocritical?
I can probably guess the answer...

You shouldn't have been, friend. Deep within the heart of every leftist extremist, there lurks a Gestapo informer.

If for any reason I end up in a city that banned firearms are some types of guns, I would not tell anyone I own guns and they will be well hidden.

You know, at least that guy has the honesty to unabashedly go whole hog. I'd rather be stabbed in the chest than in the back. At least that way I have some idea as to what's coming, and can prepare myself accordingly. Its freaks like Kerry that somehow manage to convince lots of duck and deer hunters that they're not a threat to their guns that really do the damage.

After SF passes this ban, people should start calling the police with anonymous tips that Daly has a gun. Don't mention him by name, just describe him wherever he goes.

Under this proposed law, I do not believe that it is a "crime" if your tip was wrong...if it was, no one would call for risk of being mistaken.

One of the first thoughts that popped into my mind. Not that particular example, but the whole book.
My guess would be if this was a marijuana issue, the host would be shocked to hear anyone say they'd turn him in.

Wrong. Falsely reporting a crime to the police is a misdemeanor under Ca. Penal Code section 148.5.
Not that I would judge anyone who reported suspicion Daly had a gun..just desserts.

Ok, maybe it is a misdemeanor. But the idea was to turn the law onto the people that pass these types of laws - they never believe that it will affect them. Think about how Sarah Brady bought a gun for her son-in-law...
Perhaps there is another way to accompish the same end?
