My son just bought a Win. Mod 70 in 300 WSM. The case looks like a fat
.308. If we stay under max loads , can we expect 8 refireings before case failure , or am I expecting too much from a magnum load?

my experience w/ the 300 wsm says no, that 4-6 firings is about all you're gonna get if your goal in life is max case life.

Neck sizing will get you a few more loads and maybe a more accurate load to boot.

To maximize case life-
1. Do not full length size the cases
2. Use a bushing-style neck-only size die without an expander ball, like the "Type S" from redding
3. Use a bushing of the LARGEST diameter that will still provide enough neck tension to retain the bullet in the neck
4. If the cases grow in head to shoulder dimension enough that there is some resistance upon closing the bolt, use a "body" die to bump the shoulder back a thou or two. This should ideally not have to be done often.
5. Don't use totally full-house loads, bring it down a few tenths

Thanks for the info. Thats what I like about reloading. I have full length resize dies. I ' ll try the nickel space gage trick. If that doesn't work. I'll get the type S redding die.

I reload .300WSM and, with proper care, I have 5 cases that are up to #8. Here's my setup:
Winchester brass
Sierra GameKing 180Gr SPBT
Winchester WLR primers
W760 Powder at 4.2cc (roughly 66grains)
I hand clean my cartridges which extends the life by not using abrasive cleaning techniques (ie tumbling). Nylon neck brush instead of metal and waiting 2-3 firings before reaming flash hole & primer pocket.
Just my $0.02....

PS: The rifle is a Savage 11FXP3 bolt action
