New Jersey resident: Florida CCW permit?

I overheard some people talking the other day and its a shame I didnt have time to enter the conversation. All I heard was that in NJ you can get a florida CCW permit and be able to carry in states that recognize the permit. Is this true? I have never heard of that so I decided to ask the all knowing THR board. NRA-ILA and packing.org have provided me with no solid info. Or, I missed it.
But If you could straighten this out, I would appreciate it. Thanks

I don't have my Florida CCW handbook handy, but I don't think it's impossible for an out-of-stater to get a Florida CCW. I'd have to double-check on what criteria there might be.
That would give you the ability to use that in any states that have reciprocity.
I'll try and look it up later, when I can.

Yes, you can get nonresident permits from FL and a number of other states that have provisions for it. Packing's got the online pdf application form. You have to send the app, fingerprints, and proof of a basic level handgun class plus the fee, and it takes a month or two to process.
You have to be a little extra careful with nonres permits when it comes to state reciprocity: Some states will allow carriage on another states permit only if you are a resident of that state. Some will recognize the other state's permits regardless.

This site should answer your questions. In general, some states require a copy of your home state carry license before they will issue a non-resident license (NH and Maine, for example).
Some states do not honor non-resident licenses from other states (Florida does not honor my NH non-resident license.)

You know, if we could just get all states to recognize our "Vermont non-resident CCW permits", we'd be in great shape.

Don't, I hold one and I have never been to Florida. My took 69 days and $117, a two side application (IIRC), proof of training and photos of me (probably for the female personnel to put up on the cubicles).

I was wondering what they did with those pictures.

Mongo, I would not think the women would put my prints up on the cubicle walls, but, hey, I'm just a Yankee boy. Don't know what they are into down there.:D

Do it.
I have one and I live in NY. I'll be traveling to Kansas soon and carrying in Penn, Indiana, Ohio (visible in car). Not Ill. or Kansas however.
Missouri also recognizes all other state permits (not sure about VT's). While the cities were dragging their feet on issuing permits many Missourians just got the Florida permit to carry in their own state<g>. The law was written that way just to circumvent reactionary sheriffs.

"(not sure about VT's)."
There is no such thing. Vermont is a non-licensing state. Vermonters carry with no licenses.

Get's you 28 states, but not NJ. Packing.org has all the info you need.
Now if they'd just get SC off their behinds I'd have the entire SE.

The info you need is available on packing.org. They were my source when I obtained a FL permit. I believe it is recognized in between 29 and 31 states at the moment.

If you are ex-military that will count for firearms safety training for Fla. If you have to get training you might look into Utah, their non-resident is only 59 $59 for five years and covers about the same number of states. I have both non resident Florida and Utah, and Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, I live in Illinois so no resident CCW. I needed both Florida and Utah because I have in-laws in Florida and Minnesota, Minnesota doesn't honor Florida, and Florida doesn't honor any non-resident except their own. Jim.
