(3/31/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- The Dixie Chicks controversy continues with the trio getting some support from former Vice President Al Gore. Gore spoke to a college audience last week on the subject of fewer companies owning more media outlets, and what he sees as the increasing lack of tolerance for opposing views.

According to the Tennessean, Gore used recent attacks on the Dixie Chicks that followed anti-war comments by Natalie Maines as an example. Gore told the audience, "They were made to feel un-American and risked economic retaliation because of what was said. Our democracy has taken a hit," Gore said. "Our best protection is free and open debate."

Record sales have fallen for the Chicks and radio stations across the country banned the trio's music after Maines told a London concert crowd that she was "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." Maines later released an apology.

Well, if nothing else, there is a love-triangle synergy of sorts.

Clinton/Gore used a Fleetwood Mac tune as their theme song.
Dixie Chicks cover a Fleetwood Mac tune
Gore defends Dixie Chicks.
Ox wain left Chartres and was later seen at Rosslyn Castle Scotland;)

Geez ... come on ...

The Dipsy Twits excersized their right to speak, and "we" excersized our right to not listen.

By the way Al, I excersized my right not to vote for you - I suppose that counts as oppression.

Somebody give these kids a teddie bear and a blanket ...

Al Gore misses the whole point, as usual. Anyone has the right to speak their minds about the subjects that they want. But we AS A FREE SOCIETY also have the right not to like what they say and through peacable means demonstrate our displeasure.

Gore is just upset that Bush is still very popular with the people, and that his party is not as popular as it once was.

Amazing how we hear all this "free and open debate" malarky now that there are several "conservative" or "right-leaning" news outlets that actually get large audiences.

the subject of fewer companies owning more media outlets

Translation: It's ok if Ted Turner owns the world as long as he plays nice and gives James Carville et. al plenty of face time. However, if Rupert Murdoch does the same thing, well then, he's a no good antichrist lovin' neofacist obviously. Duh!

How come the media never used the term "media bias" from 92-20?

"They were made to feel un-American and risked economic retaliation because of what was said. Our democracy has taken a hit," Gore said.
Exactly how is it democratic to tell me that I can't refuse to buy the goods of someone I don't like? How many Rush Limbaugh books has Al Gore ever purchased I wonder?

Can you imagine what sorry shape our nation would be in if Liar Gore and his assault lawyer minions had been allowed to get away with stealing the presidential election of 2000?

What a complete nitwit!

It is a shows that the combination of a free market and democratic republic works.
The Dixie Chicks and Al Gore have a right to voice their thoughts. I have a right to say what I think of them, their opinion, and the horse they rode in on. I can choose to call in to stations to play or not play some music. I can do what I always did and not buy their stuff.
As if the "media outlets" have an opinion. If they thought everybody agreed with the Dixie Chicks, they would be playing it all the time. Its about the money, not lack of tolerance.

What Croyance said, though these may be alien concepts to certain liberal Democrats and stupid 'entertainers'

They's a lot of ways to vote, e.g. via the ballot box, with your wallet, with your feet, etc. If you go out and say something really stupid and/or offensive, it may be your right to express your opinion, but don't expect those who disagree with you to want to share your space. Actions have consequences (write that down, Al). People may 'vote' to shun you, ignore you, walk away from you, decline your goods and services, etc. Free market, free country, God Bless America.

Well, that's America Al. You have a right to express yourself (aka, Dixie Chicks) and we have a right to respond by:

1) Having our say as well.

2) Acting on our thoughts and emotions by boycotting.

3) Having the opinion that words such as those spoken by the Dixie Chicks as being "Un-American" if we want to think that way.

The ladies had their say and many Americans have responded correctly....no CD's, no radio air time, no need to come home from Europe. Hastal luego.......

I think that Al should be very clear and concise as to what we should and shouldn't tolerate. Or is there not a clear answer to that question ? WAFFLER !!!!!!!!!:D

A couple of weeks ago I received spam in my yahoo account asking me to sign a petition supporting the Dixie Chicks. I clicked on the link to see how many people had signed it. (small for an internet petition, only about 3k at the time) I saw many negative comments on it :uhoh: Guess a lot of people didn't read the part about it being in support of the group. At the bottom of the sign petition portion, there was a checked box saying the you consented to receive e-mails from the Democratic Party on this and other important issues.
