I have found a 686-5, 2 1/2 inch round butt, 7 shot revolver at a local dealer in good condition with Hogue ruber grips (are they from the factory).
What is a fair price for this gun. The dealer is asking $390 but will come down. I don't know how much he will come down, but I need a fair price to go by before making an offer.
Thanks

For some reason the 2 1/2" versions often go for more. I could never figure this out since there is less barrel. In any case, $390 would be on the high side, but not unreasonable. If it is truly in great condition, offer $340 and expect to pay $360. Make sure you do a "Jim March" used revolver checkout. These are great little guns.

My favorite Smith revolver. I'd pitch him $350, would be willing to go $375 if it's in great shape.

Depends what state your in. Out here in Nazifornia, the 686+ runs about $550 new at the discount shops, higher at the rip off shops. $400 for a really nice used one would be a steal out here, especially since I believe the -5 still had the hammer mounted firing pin and no MIM hammer or trigger? If that gun is in really nice shape, I would actually prefer it over a new gun. Be sure to check lock up, b/c gaps, etc.

The 686-5 has a frame mounted firing pin and it does have MIM parts. It does not however have the internal lock.
