BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - A hand grenade being used instead of a ball in a game of catch exploded early on Saturday killing three youths in this Bosnian town, police and news agencies said.
Two youths aged 19 and 20, one of them from neighboring Croatia, were killed instantly while a 20-year-old woman died on her way to hospital, police said. Her sister was slightly injured but two other youths suffered serious injuries.
The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Police said an inquiry was under way and declined further comment. It was not clear why the grenade exploded.
ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them.
Bosnia is awash with illegal weapons left over from the 1992-95 war and tragic incidents are frequent despite several successful campaigns by international peacekeepers and police to get people to hand over illegal weapons.

Sad, but... The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Wonder if alcohol was involved? It was not clear why the grenade exploded. that's what they are supposed to do. ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them. This game used to be called "hot potato." Back in the '60 there was a game called "Time Bomb." It was this black hard plastic ball with a red cap and "fuse." You would twist the cap to wind an "oven timer"-like thing.

Having never been in any branch of the US Armed Forces, I STILL can grasp the concept that hand grenades EXPLODE, sending many pointy things in a lot of directions VERY fast.:neener:
Another gallon of Chlorine of the gene pool, please
A childhood friend had the "Time Bomb" game that Mr. Bowman showed us.

"Three shall be the number of thy counting. Two shalt thou not count except on thy way to three. Four is right out."
I wonder if calling strike three had anything to do with it?

At least it didn't happen here. About 10 or 15 years ago, a group of young campers found an old grenade on a former base. They dutifully brought it back to camp and after fooling with it, threw it in their campfire. Some time later there was an expected result. Can't remember how much the lawyers got for the families. How does 19 and 20 years old qualify as "youngsters". Seems to me they're several years past the youngster stage of life.

Ok, I just gotta ask. If that was the only "ball" they had to play with why didn't they unscrew the fuse/detonator:scrutiny: Agreed, alcohol or drugs had to be involved.
I have a few thought on where some of these “balls” need to be found but they don’t belong on the Highroad:evil:

We all assume they were playing ball. Suppose to be supposing they weren't playing ball but were playing Audey Murphy where he and one of his guys play catch with a grenade before tossing it into a room full of evil Chermans. I can see a reporter ignoring kids playing Audey Murphy and latch onto the catch part.
Hey, I'm just lookin' at all possiblities. :scrutiny:
