I have a couple of boys that will be shooting age soon, and I am planning ahead. Has anybody loaded up some light recoiling 125 gr. .308 loads. Most of the 125 recipes that I see are trying to make the bullet just scream. I am looking for something that will be similar to 7.62X39mm ballistics. I really do not want to start the boys out on the .223. Thanks

The Speer Manual #13 lists a reduced load for the 308 with either the 125 or 130 grain bullets. They use IMI cases, CCI 200 primer, Speer bullet and IMR4198 powder. 25.0 grains for start and 29.0 for top. I have used these loadings and find them to be quite accurate.

I used to reload 93gr. 7.63 Mauser pistol bullets in .308 cases for a friend of mine who swore by them for accuracy and terminal ballistics on game. When he originally asked, I found the recipe for such a thing in Phil Sharpe's Handloading Book. Quantrill

"20 grains of 2400," sez Art. Works for .30-40 Krag to .30-'06 and most anything in between. Lead gas check or jacketed bullets, up to around 170 grains.

For less of a light plinker and more of a mid-range load in the .308, you could go to 25 grains or so...
