While I was at the range I did another round of Colt vs. S&W. This time a couple of rim fires were tested. A Colt Diamondback and a Model 18-3 were pitted against one another in a short and informal test.

Shooting at 10 yards, the Smith turned in an average of 1.37” which is pretty fair shooting, I’d say. Now, the Colt presents a small problem in evaluation. The D’back averaged 1.42” which is very close to the M18 but loses none the less. But, the Colt’s results are marred by one group that includes a huge, honking flier (that was called with a few bad words). If we drop the one errant round, the Colt’s group average falls to an amazing .97”! I’m inclined to let the Colt have a “gimme” on this one. Except for the one bad shot (waaay out of the group) the D’back takes the prize with ease. But you decide which gun was the winner. Strictly by the rules it’s the M18. In reality it’s the Colt.

Ten yards is pretty close ... :scrutiny:

Move out to 25 and even 50 yards. Of course the groups will open up, but whatever the difference is, it will be more obvious. Also check to be sure one chamber isn't to blame for the flyer.

I did Round I (Python v. 27) at 25 yards and found the results didn't change much. Both guns shot bigger groups but they remained relative to the 10 yard results. Seriously, I can't see the target at 50. Too old. If you want long range comparisions you'll need to find someone with younger eyes to do the shooting.
