US-led forces claim to have encircled the city of Karbala in central Iraq, seen by the American military as the last major hurdle on the road to Baghdad.

"encircled the city of Karbala"

Well there still could be a significant amount of resistance within the city itself.

From what I understand, taking Karbala isn't part of the plan.

We just want it enclosed so we can protect our troops rolling through the "Karbala gap" headlong into Baghdad.

CENTCOM is saying that the Baghdad Division is as dead as Cleese's parrot.

They're trying to get back "on plan" I think. No need to defeat in detail every town and city enroute. But, as the 7th and 8th Marines have learned the hard way, flank security for your logistics train is vital. Damn the torpedos! Full speed ahead!
