aaaRRGGH!! Why do Sigs rust so darn much!

My sig keeps rusting! i polish, oil, etc, rust again in a few months.

esp that little round piece (mag release, right side)!

other than that it shoots realy well. it's a USED piece and i can easily put a hole right through the one before it using iron sights at 25 feet using cheapie CCI. amazing, really.

Are you close to the ocean? I live in a fairly humid environment and don't have rust issues with my Sigs. :confused:

What has worked for me with all of my firearms is when new I literally soak them in Breakfree CLP, just let it sit and soak in for 15 or 20 minutes. After that I clean normally and about once a year or so I do it again. I have only had a tiny bit of surface rust on the hammer of my SIG P245 in a spot that rarely gets wiped down and probably sees it's share of sweat.

I also clean my guns after every range session and they are stored indoors, not in a garage.

Duke and I have shot our 226s in the rain and so far my Sig looks great. How do you store your pistol?

I think part of the problem lies in the fact that it is used. It probably is a carbon steel slide with a blued finish. I have two new Sigs with Nitron over stainless finishes and one new Sig with Ilaflon on carbon steel. Both show no signs of rust. I also have a new Sig P228 with blued over carbon steel. It hasn't rusted yet. They may have improved their corrosion control efforts in recent years on those guns. Normally, blued over carbon steel doesn't provide a whole heck of a lot of corrosion resistance.

What oil are you using? Where/how are you storing it?

The only things that have rusted on my current SIGs ( 239,232,2340) have been the grip screws and I really should replace them,but they sorta give some character.My old 225 looked _rough_ by the time I traded it in though and I never carried the 220 so it still looked new.

ETA: obviously there are no grip screws to rust on the Pro!

No gun in Sigs price range should have rust issues,but with Sig it just goe's on and on.:confused:

I find it interesting that my P220 has never had rust issues. It is a carbon stamped slide, blued. The bluing on the slide rates a 60% coverage, maximum. I carry it 7 days a week, at least five o fthose in an open, exposed holster as a LEO. Rain, sleet, snow, sun, doesnt matter, its exposed. I wipe it down once a week, never had a speck of rust.

I gather NYPD had some rust issues early on with their Sigs. I understand the problem has been resolved.

Well the Navy SEALS use them so... maybe the oil you're using isn't meant to stay on very long or something? Because I know blueing by itself does nothing to stop corrosion, it simply provides a base for oil to stay on. Its the oil itself that actually stops rust.

Have you considered that it might be your sweat that is corroding it? Some people have extremely corrosive sweat, that just dissolves unprotected metal in a few days.

The SEAL-Spec guns have a phosphate coating.

What parts are you polishing? If its the finish you'll polish thru the finish to the bare metal? Explain please.

No problems with rust on my SIG either. Light coat of oil does wonders. :)

This is odd, I've had a P229 since 1996 and live a mile from the ocean, (and only wipe the gun with an untreated cloth after each handling) and have never had any rust in almost a decade here.

Is this a newer Sig issue?

The decock and slide release levers on my older 239 rust badly. The rest of the pistol is stainless steel and aluminum alloy, but those d@mned levers are blued carbon steel and they rust on me. I had several pistols in Tennessee with me in September and had rust problems on the carbon steel components of all of them -- hammer and trigger on the J-frame, sights on the S&W 4013, and sights (XS Big Dot), mag release, and levers on the Sig. High humidity, carbon steel and I don't mix. :cuss:

makes no sense to me , even in the rainforest of the PNW in an open holster , never a spot of rust ... how very strange...:confused:

The only places any of my SIGs rust are those dang grip screws.

I carry one daily and even in this Dallas heat that's the only place I've run across it. I wipe down the finish with a clean, dry cloth. I might give it a little light going-over with a dab of oil on a cloth maybe once every 6 months or so as far as exterior surfaces, but nothing extraordinary. Mine are all standard garden-variety factory finishes. Either I'm not as naturally juicy as you, or there's something funky about your sweat :D

It's not me, I got it used this way (stupid me for not looking it over VERY closely).

The rest of the sig is wonderful, it's just that little spot where the mag release button thingie shows on the right side of the gun (it's circular, right next to the grip). and it's not major rust, just spotting. but it won't come off. =(

I think i'll just ignore it until i have to replace the mag release, and then i'll worry about finding a gunsmith then.

the rest of the gun is fine - i use breakfree clp.

Put a coat of turtle wax car polish over it after you remove the rust next time. That will protect it nicely.

Its funny, I've got a 1990 West German SIG-SAUER P228, and a 1995
West German P220A and both look as good as the day they followed
me home; factory fresh~!:cool: Of course, they get a lot of T-L-C.:D

Hmmmm, I carry a Sig P-220 two-tone .45 in all kinds of weather, rain, snow, sleet, humid to A/C and back.......not one speck of rust on my gun. And I'm a LEO so I'm standing out in all kinds of crap, especially in the winter here in the northeast.

Never had a problem with any SIG that I've owned either.

My guess is you have one of the older blued finish guns? If so, the rust is going to be part of life unless you get it refinished. I had one of the Nitron coated 220s and my buddy had one of the older blued guns. We worked at the same place and did the same job and carried them the same way but his would rust and mine wouldn't. You just probably have a gun that is going to be a LOT more prone to rust than some others.

My advice, sell it and get a better finish and poof, all your rust problems will be over.

Sig P220 here and the grip screws rust - and rust - and rust...

I've gotten used to it. I take'm out and brush 'em down with a nylon brush then soak in CLP. they clean up real nice.

Another week goes by and the rust is back. Oklahoma isn't exactly close to the ocean but those darn screws rust anyways.

Got some rust on the slide once. Cleaned it off and did the CLP soak over night thing. Seems to have worked - no more rust on the slide.
