went to my closest gun dealer today to either pickup or order a new mossberg 590a1. 12 gauge. The real nice one with the ghost ring sights, heavy barrel and metal safety, trigger gaurd. The store clerk told me the owner wont carry or order mossberg products at all. Say's he doesnt like the way they work or shoot. This shotgun has every thing "stock" on it that I want, and even if it isnt the "cadillac" of brands I have heard nothing but mostly good about them. I call b.s on the store clerks excuse and will be going to another store for the gun. Has anyone else come across this with products at gun stores. I found it interesting he doesnt carry mossberg's but carry's taurus like to no end.:cuss: I have often found in the past that alot of gun dealers in my area dont seem to know beans about products in the industry and wouldnt count on any info a dealer had to say to me. there opinions are largely profit motivated

In the course of calling gun stores across the country to be on my site, I've found several that don't carry brands such as Mossberg, Savage, etc. A good number of them don't sell Remington 870 Express models, either.
The owners say that it's because the box stores such as WalMart, Galyan's, Sportsmens Warehouse, etc can sell them for less than what the individually-owned shops can.
It may be that the clerk either isn't aware of why his boss doesn't stock them, or just didn't want to say.
Or maybe the owner is just a jerk. ;)

I think MonkeyLeg hit it. Many of them can't buy them for what Walmart sells them for, therefore, they don't carry them.

the other threads are correct about why gun stores do not carry Mossberg
Alot of the bigger stores do have them , its all about buying power.
Most of the shops do give a honest answer to these type of things.
The sad part is the smaller shops can not get the deal the bigger places do because they do not spend enough money with the suppier
Mossbergs in my area are being sold at Wal Mart for 150 (mostly 500 model)

Yup. But WalMart doesn't fix guns, so where do you think the buyers go when their Mossberg's or Remington 870 Express's have problems?
To the little shop.
There's one shop owner I talked to who to an extent outwitted WalMart. When WM was having a sale on the base 870 Express model, he went over and bought a whole bunch of them. Then, after the sale, he was actually able to sell them for less than what WM was charging. He didn't really make more than a few bucks on them, but he got even.
Back to the original question, though, for many shops the 590a1 would be a special order.

thanks for the replies. this is what I thought to. I have bought 3 ruger revo's at this store and have been very happy. but shopping there lately I've caught a few b.s things being said. TO ANYONE NEW TO SHOPPING FOR FIREARMS, TAKE EVERY THING A DEALER SAYS TO YOU WITH A LARGE GRAIN OF SALT. This is essentially true to any kind of shopping in general.:scrutiny:

pezo, since you live in michigan I assume you already know about Guns Galore in Fenton. Thats where I go to avoid supporting wallmart while still paying minimal prices. My friend got a used mossberg there for 190 bucks.

Not for Moss specifically, but I know of a local gun store that refuses to carry, or even special order, Taurus. They just don't like them.
I know another store that will absolutely refuse to special order anything. Regardless of you even laying cash on the counter! I don't understand that at all. But they will not do it: "If it ain't in the display, we ain't got it!" is what they'll say. I don't shop there much.
Part of running your own store is you get to control the inventory. When I worked at a small computer shop, there were several brands of motherboards that we refused to carry, cause we felt they were crap. Another manufacturer made great boards, but their return policies sucked, so we didn't work with them. Would S.O. on occasion, but only when the customer understood they were on their own for warranty work.

Pezo, What area/city/county are you in?
I've only been given grief at one store in Michigan so far. Whether buying or browsing, I've found almost all to be friendly.
Not to take the shops side but you did go into a gun store durring the busiest two weeks of the year. Deer season. Even the good folks at Williams Gun Sight can get cranky this time of year. Everyone wants it now and for 20% under cost.
Lemme know where you're at. Maybe I can recommend someone.

Forget that dealer. Here's Mossberg's suggested list of dealers found on its website:

The 590A1 is a great gun. I hope you find one.

If there are other dealers within easy driving distance, find one who has a better attitude about customer service. If not, ask this oddball how much they charge to do transfers, and if the fee is reasonable then find yourself a deal elsewhere (good enough to make up for the shipping costs and transfer fee) and buy the gun where you find it at a good price.
Nothing beats having a good honest helpful FFL dealer close by. It's a shame there aren't more of them out there.

One of the things you will hear from gunshop owners is "sell what is on the shelf".
This is pretty standard throughout the retail world, regardless of what you are selling.
Some will say anything to avoid having to special order items.
Usually 50% down will do the trick, but I do not deal with gunshops that are difficult.
Plenty of others out there that want my business.

P.s "brown bear" is on that list. They were the store that would NOT order the peice for me or carry mossberg in general. Obviously mossberg is unaware. Double action had mine on order today no problem's
