I ground away at some V-blocks and use them to hold the Weaver mounts for changing the radius on one side or the hole centers on the other.

I like the idea.
Are yoiu getting a lot of requests for 10X32 Torx screws in place of the crappy factory screws?
I am and recommend them to an extent but have to modify the factory screw hole for the torx screws to mate properly.
I forgot to add that I use a drill press in place of a mill and use wooden blocks between the vise jaws and accraglass shim fillers to secure the mount between the blocks.

I use Weaver steel mounts whenever I can get them.

I get sporterized rifles at gunshows and pawn shops. When a beauty goes for cheap, it will often turn out the sights cannot not be made to work as is.

I have been expanding the countersink of the mount, as shown in the picture, and making the through hole have an oblong shape, in order to get things to line up. I also put shims under mounts.

I have never gone to a heavier screw. The 6-48 screw holes I use as is, or TIG weld the screw holes over and re drill and tap 6-48. I have the heavy screws, I just have not got around to trying them.

THe cheapest place to buy steel Weaver mounts is not wholesale for gunsmiths at Brownells, but at Midsouth:
