Glock Barrel Question

Hi all,

I'm noticing a very pronounced dark band on the inside of my Glock 21 barrel. When you look from the breech end one can see the band approximately halfway down the barrel. From visual estimation, the band is 0.25 to 0.50 in. in width and fully encircles the interior of the barrel.

The gun shoots fine with no noticeable degradation in accuracy. This is an older Gen 2 M21 that's shot a lot. A mix of commercial and reloads are used. The reloads are the predominant ammo and consist of either Remington or Ranier bullets, 4.2gr Bullseye, a mix of brass and Fed 150 primers. Brass brushing and use of a copper solvent make no impact.

The question to our group of Glock experts, is what I am I seeing?

Thanks in advance,

John

Maybe a bullet got stuck in the bore staining it somehow?

Don't know without seeing it, but a ring in the barrel is usually a sign of a bulged barrel. :what:  I wouldn't shoot it again until I had it checked by a competent gunsmith, IIWY.

Without seeing it, I'd suspect a bulged barrel too. Can you feel ANY difference in resistance at any point when you push a tightly fitting patch down the barrel with a cleaning rod? If there's even the slightest "skip" somewhere it indicates a bulged barrel. (I bought a muzzle loader once that turned out to have THREE (count 'em) rings in its barrel - they're harder to inspect than breech loaders) and you could feel each one of them with a tight patch.)

Hi all,

Well, the suspicions have been confirmed through a visit at my local and well-experienced gun shop. The verdict is a bulged barrel *and* some undetected damage to the slide caused by it forcibly cycling over the bulge.

My reloads are the first suspects. My guy at the shop suspects either a double charged round or a no-charged round followed quickly by a normal round. In any event, the barrel, frame, and slide went off to Glock today. Standby for further information as it becomes available.

This Glock 21 was my primary home defense weapon. *gasp*, Does this mean the dreaded 1911 has to come out of the gun safe, or am I better advised to use a stone and sling? :)

Thanks for the help all....

John
