just a guess on my part, so forum dont eat me alive for giving a bad guess, but id say its a magazine tube block so the gun cant take more than 3 shells. i dont hunt but i have heard that its not legal to hunt with a mag capasity of more than 3 shot shells.

Commonly called a mag plug or duck plug, it limits capacity to two shots in the mag to conform to regulations for hunting migratory birds. The rules call for no more than three shells can be placed in the shotgun when hunting.

One places this in the magazine with the big end towards the muzzle.

That is a magazine plug that keeps you from loading more than 3 rounds in a gun for migrtory bird hunting. Standard equipment with any new gun purchase.

Per-zactly what it is.

Magazine plug to reduce the mag capacity to 2 rounds, 3 in the gun total. That particular one is for both the 870 & 1100 Remington models.

The "Game & Fish Cops" get REALLY unhappy if you are using a shotty with an ammo capacity of more than 3 for "Migratory Birds"...All waterfowl [ducks, geese] and doves are in this category.

Yep,
One of them new-fangled, high-dollared, tricked out to meet Mi-gree-toried Ree-strict-uns, so's you cannot miss more than three times, trying to shoot a dove, quail, duck, or somesuch.

Still like my wooden one's better...got's 'em nekkid, some painted red- just like the factory sent 'em. In all 4 gauges too.

Practical, not Tacticool . But I hits what I look at - hits what I point at...even wit them paper hulled shells...

I've got one made out of driftwood.

Went pheasant hunting in Kansas (blockers with semi-autos don't need no dang plugs :D ), then was hunting ducks a few weeks later and realized I hadn't put the plug back in. Sat down right there and then and made one. I think it's still in the old 11-48.

Add Woodcock to that list of migratory birds. I just do not hunt anything without that plug in my guns. That way I don't worry about it.

Only remove the plug if you are in an area regularly visited by goblins and zombies 5 shells are better than 3 then.

I just pried the mag spring cap out of the magazine on my Remington 1100. Sure enough, the ink pen I installed in 1977 was still in my mag tube. IIRC, I lost the mag plug right after I bought the shotgun and used an inkpen for a replacement.
