The Stevens Model 87 was the same as the Savage Model 6. They made the same gun with the Springfield name (I think it was the Model 76).

Replacing the safety is no big deal if you can find one. If the safety is missing, the safety spring and the two safety screws probably are missing also, so you may have to order them as well.

While many shooters have used those guns and like them, I worked on dozens and thought it was one of the worst designs I ever encountered. The box magazine version wasn't too bad, but the tube magazine gun was a PITA to get working right. Many times I felt like telling the customer where to put the thing, but I never did.

Sounds like it's not quite the good deal I hoped. It's in really grungy shape externally, but it has a rifled bore and the hammer falls. About to plier a .22 to make a blank to test the firing pin.

Any advice on what to watch out for? Is it really that bad? Should I add it to the list of "not a deal at any price", along with those Winchester ripoffs of the Glenfield that nobody likes?

It was just hard to pass up for $35, as it's kind of a cool-looking semi-auto, and a good $15 cheaper than my first Marlin 60 was (three months ago, I'm young). Or should I just suck it up and buy yet another Marlin next time (have probably a half-dozen now)?

Pulled the bullets and dumped powder on two .22LR rounds.

The Marlin 100 popped it just fine.

The Savage 87h failed to light the primer, or even leave a nick, despite numerous recockings and firings, and it took about fifteen racks for the extractor to get ahold of the round and eject it.

On second thought, would those issues be caused by manually loading a cartridge into the chamber (vice feeding), or is the firing pin probably broken?

Okay, turns out that you can't manually load an 87H.

Took it out and shot it with Aguila Colibris, and it works just fine (manually cycling). So I'll take it and clean it up, see how it functions.

Next time I'll stick to the $65 Marlin 60s.

Does anyone have a scanned copy of the model 87h owners guide??
