It seems like I've seen references to this store on gun forums in the past. I've never been to one, but I saw a commercial for one that is opening about 30 miles from me soon.
Do these places sell guns or accessories? What do you think of them? Christmas is coming!

I used to live in Corpus Christi TX, and we had an academy sports there. It's an all-arounds sports store, from jogging suits, shoes, raquets, footballs and all, they have a good selection of camping gear, hunting gear so on....they sell a pretty decent stock of firearms and tons of fishing gear. I loved the place, the wife and kids liked it to cause theres tons of stuff for them there also. It's not half of what a Cabellas, Bass pro, or Sportsmans warehouse is, all of those places cater mostly to outdoors sports/hunting camping fishing, as where Academy caters to all the sports. But yea, they got lots of goodies to drain the bank account!

They sell 9mm CCI Blazer aluminum for something like $3.86 per box of 50. That's pretty much all I have bought from there since the rest of their ammo doesn't seem to be cheaper than walmart.

They do sells guns, but their selection isn't all that large. They can probably order guns for you, but since their prices aren't anything special and I would have to pay sales tax, I've never even bothered to ask. They have a better selection of accessories than Walmart

State Laws and Reg's may differ for you - that said:

Mine carries Handguns, Rifles and Shotguns. Ammo from .22 lr, to rifle, and shotguns. Accessories from Slings, Scopes, rings, handgun/rifle/ shotgun soft sided cases.

Prices are very good, Sunday's add once again has the 870 Express for $198, Blazer 9mm ammo for $3.86 a box of 50.

Sales staff have always been courteous and polite. If they do not know - and they have flat said "I'm not a shotgunner, let me get so and so that is more familar with shotguns...".

Here is the way I and others use AS. My gunsmith buddy, By the time he orders a 870 Express, Ruger 10/22, or Marlin 60, add shipping HE suggests folks go to AS to buy one. Allows them to pick out the wood , compare or whatever.

Not his big market, so when a good customer wants something and AS has in stock , he recommends AS.

Gunsmith does Capsian Frames and Slides, orders Shueman barrels, Deals with STI...he has his niche in some rifles and shotguns too.

Matter of the him the old school Mom&Pop craftsman, service oriented doing what he does best, and making a profit and respecting AS ability to stick mdse he - he does not make much money - still is married to the sale with service. Business is Business.

Paintball and all that goes with it - has a huge selection at mine. Kids standing in line for air, cart full of paintballs.

Outdoors? Clothes, gear tents, boats motors, fishing and camping equipment from - you name it - they got it.

Regular clothing and shoes for kids to adults -great selection, better prices and quality than many other stores.

Gunsmith buddy got in a tight, Seems his wife helped straighten some inventory...without telling him. I had to make AS on the way home and get swivel mounts and such for a last minute rush job. AS had it, and the job finished on time.

The Cat nor My Wife allowed in here -signage ignored again it seems. :p

I don't think I'd buy a gun from them but their ammo selection and prices are very good.

Thanks for reminding me - I guess its the one store I'll visit for some .32ACP ammo this aft to run through a Zastava Model 70 I got last week.

Academy has decent prices for ammo. In Houston, it depends on the location of the store ( basically if its in a "thugged out" area or not) on whether or not they carry handguns and every store has a different selection. I was close to getting a Mossberg 500 persuader from them for about $238, but wanted to compare prices first. Some even had some Bushmaster Ar-15's with the M4A2 configuration for about $800 but they only carried 1 in the store. If someone had bought it it was roughly 3 weeks before another 1 was back in stock.

Is out front of Mine.
Has a list of folks I am no longer allowed to be a "personal assistant shopper with".

There is something about a Buggy Filled to over capacity with cases of shotgun shells, and a handsome Grandson of 4 sitting on this massive pile approaching checkout.

"You got enought ammo there son" Asks the checker...
"No we have another one with with my ammo...look...see?"

And here I come with a over filled buggy with clays, bricks of .22 ammo...and I the six pack of itty bitty bottles of Tobasco sauce the 4 year old went nuts over.

Dunno about Art's Grammaw - I heard some stuff from one Grammaw make a Sailor blush.

"You were supposed to get him tennis shoes and a box of .22 shells."
"I ran into Steve and ...and...".

'I don't want to hear it...being with Steve in a place full of guns and all...'

Grandma's I thought were forgiving, I guess she is still mad at me about the 28 ga she had me assist her with for a Anniversary Gift for Grandpa some years ago in a Mom&Pop Gun place.

Academy is great for cheap Blazer 9mm, shotgun shells, clothes and several other items. I spend plenty $$ there and am glad they are near me.

They have good, sometimes great, prices on the guns they carry, but their selection of handguns is usually fairly limited.

They have a very strict no return policy on guns. Once out the door, you are on your own -- go see the manufacturer.

I bought a Ruger Mk II from them and would buy other very reliable guns, but I would hesitate to buy anything that I was not very sure would work fine out of the box.

They had several Glocks recently for just under $500, which is a good price in my area. I visited a traditional gun store minutes later that was having a special Glock sale with a Glock rep on site, etc. The "special" prices were less than their usual, but still about $20 more than Academy. Did not have the heart to tell them.

They have good prices if you can catch them.

Cheap ammo as others have stated.

I bought a Mossberg 590 persuader for $129

10/22 for $99

S&W 642 for $349

Bricks of Federal .22 LR for $6.40 per brick

The cases of 12 gauge #9 shot for $31 are good too.

It's a good place to get scope mounts, knives, cleaning supplies etc...

For the calibers I shoot, Academy has been the cheapest across the board. I go there because I don't wanna pay Walmart's High prices on ammo.

just a note stemming from an earlier post....

They can probably order guns for you,

last time i checked it was a case of, "what ya see is what ya got, we get what corporate sends us, no special orders on firearms." this from 2 or three different locations on the south side of the houston area. things may have changed since then (lord knows the ARs were quick to show up after the ban died), but i no longer even bother, with the exception as noted by at least one other poster, of 10/22s and 870s. i can get the majority of stuff at a reasonable enough price from the locals.

only time i buy gun stuff from em is when i run out of Hoppe's on a sunday (gonna have to break down and get a gallon jug of No.9 at the next show i guess)

best deals i've found on New Balance tennis shoes though (important fact for guys with 11-1/2 EEEE feet aka boat paddles)
