Ok, 3.5" chambered Remington 870, basically, you shoot you goto pump, and the thing is just stuck, I usually had to unstick it by holding the forearm and slamming the butt on the ground....
so I gave away that shotgun, now my cousins gun is doing it too, and he refuses to hop on the mossberg bandwagon with me :(
funny thing is, he takes a lot better care of his shotgun than I ever did mine, any ideas exactly what could be causing this problem?
/detests remington products
//they just never seem to work right
///except their thermal underwear
/////even that remington jacket I have is too noisy for hunting
/////SLASHES!!!!

Most likely you neglected to clean the factory preservative out of the chamber, and used the cheapest ammunition available, probably Winchester, with brass plated steel heads on the shells. That's the usual combination that causes the problem you mentioned.
A good cleaning (as per the owners manual) and a change in ammo would likely have solved the problem. Failing that, a trip back to Remington would have been in order. Your solution to the problem was definitely permanent and no doubt made someone very happy though, so far be it from me to object. Hope the Mossberg bandwagon gives you a good ride.

Wait- did you write Express Magnum?
That's a 3" gun. The Super Magnum is 3.5". If you used 3.5" shells in a 3" gun, they wouldn't feed right.
Winchester promo rounds suck. They get stuck. Remington rounds don't. I shoot doubles with an Express Magnum and cheap Remington rounds. Works great.
A little oil works, too. My 870 Express Magnum is flawless.

I had the same issues with my Express Magnum when i first got it a couple of years ago, very nearly ditched the gun.:fire:
Did some research on the "interweb" and learned the chamber could do with a good scrub out.
Did the chamber with some very fine emery paper wrapped around my favourite bore brush and a battery drill, then 00 steel wool, then a bore paste, or rouge on a cloth, result is a chamber that has a mirror reflection.
Next lightly steeled off any burrs on the action arms.
Never had a problem since, unless i don't shuck it properly.
Gun is used 2 - 3 times a week for everything. and it is no longer fussy on ammo:p

I had the same problem with an Express Magnum. I finally had a factory Remington gunsmith go over it (I had to pay for it b/c it was out of warranty) and he polished/honed the chamber to remove any burrs. It helped a lot but, I think the problem is still there. I sort of gave up on trying to make the gun 100% reliable and don't shoot it much anymore.

My hunch is a lot of these glitches will be avoided by cleaning a new 870 as both Remington and I suggest. Take it apart, soak in oil, wipe off all you can and reassemble.
Running a few thousand rounds through a chamber seems to polish it nicely.
4/0 Steel wool on a dowel chucked into a drill works.

I used to think that. So I cleaned my gun many times and shot it a fair amount over several years. Then, I finally realized something needed to be fixed . . .
After being on this board and reading all of the positive things about 870's, a lot of people will think there really can't be anything wrong with them. But, they're a mass produced, man-made mechanical device and are subject to the same problems including periods of bad quality.
Yeah, I should have tried a Mossberg too.

It'd be a whole bunch cheaper to buy another barrel than another gun. I swapped a new barrel onto one of my loaner guns and had the same trouble. This was a brand new rem-choked (my only one) barrel. I was quite embarrassed that it misbehaved. I took the 000 wool-on-drill to the chamber and it is working perfectly now. I still dislike this barrel as it is just not as nice as my older barrels and does not even have a detent ball or hole to secure it to my non-PC-dimpled guns. I'll not soon buy another new barrel from Remington unless it's an LC or maybe a WM. They should be ashamed.

PS. A friend of mine bought a new Express Magnum and had this problem also. He went to work on the chamber (after I had read that tip in one of Dave's older posts) and his gun runs flawlessly now as well.

My 870 Ex magnum does this with Sellier&Bellot 00Buck. I just thought it was that funky roll crimp they use. I was about to sell off all my remaining sb ammo but I'll polish the chamber first. I got a good deal on the ammo and it "patterns" decently in this shotty, just won't run.
Thanks guys.
