I need help! I'm trying to reload some 38 Special +P loads and I was wondering if anybody had used any Accurate No. 7 to do so? I don't have any other powder on hand and I was wondering if I could back it down a bit and still use it? I'm wanting to load some 158 gr. Hornady XTP's. I have used the powder for .357 loads with good success.

Thanks for any advice!

Accurate has loading data here: http://www.accuratepowder.com/loaddata_powder_handgun_aa7_standard.htm

You need to download 357 magnum PDF page:

I looked at these and only found a No.7 load for a 190 grain bullet. I'm using a 158 gr. bullet. Can I just deduce the load from here?

I mean like start at 6.5 gr. of No.7 and see what happens? I know this is not how I would normally do things. I just wanted to see if someone had used this combination before.

Not something to play with. That powder is just flat out too slow burning to be used in 38+p loads. AA5 is a whole different story, but AA7 likes a lot higher working pressure than 38+p runs at. If you do back the AA7 down though, USE A FIRM CRIMP, that should help.

I still don't advise this however, you back down too much, you'll see wild velocity and pressure variations, possibly into dangerous territory.

I should know better than to listen to someone who is telling me, "Oh don't worry, it should work in your 38 loads fine"(Gun Counter Store Clerk said) I went the store trying to get some No. 5 and had to come home with more No.7 because they were out of No.5

Ok then, give me a good powder that I could use in my 38 and .357 loads. Unique?

Thanks in advance guys!

For 38+p AND 357 you say?

Blue dot should fit the bill nicely. Clays universal or unique will work as well.

Blue dot would be a 38+p to full power mag powder, the other 2 are 38 to mid-range 357 powders.

KS, if you haven't looked at my post on problems with .357, check it out. I have gotten some good tips there.
