From the US Department of Justice:

Weapons and violent crime

On average each year between 1993 and 2001, approximately
26% (about 2.3 million) of the estimated 8.9 million violent
crimes in the United States were committed by offenders
armed with guns, knives, or objects used as weapons.
Firearm violence accounted for 10% of all violent crimes;
about 6% were committed with a knife or other sharp object
such as scissors, ice pick, or broken bottle; 4% with blunt
objects such as a brick, bat, or bottle; and 5% were
committed with unspecified/ "other" objects used as weapons.

So 74% is committed by unarmed criminals?!

Wierd.

If you consider someone punching another to be a "criminal", then yes.

Did you saw the place where were mentioned of how many crimes were avoided by using guns (actively - using it - or passively - just by carrying it)?

hso, unfortunately those darn prosecutors often consider punching someone to be a crime. Darn their hides.:D

What guns are only involved in a fraction of crime? But, but that's not what the media tells me. Without guns you can have a violence-free petting zoo utopia.:D

Guns didn't commit 10% of violent crime, 10% of violent criminals used guns, there is a big difference-SH

So what kind of crimes do guns generally commit? My guns have been pretty well behaved as far as I can tell, but I'd like to know what to expect if one of them gets out of line :scrutiny:

I can't tell you for sure what to expect from yours, but mine have been breeding like bunnies.

Keep them away from mine. I can`t afford to feed the ones I got.

If I were to believe those statistics that guns were used in 10% of all violent crime and other weapons were involved in 15% of all violent crime, that leaves a whopping 75% that involved no weapon at all (probably mere fists & feet & teeth, head-butts, elbow, knees, forearms, palms, fingers or mere body mass). It still boils down to guns being involved in a very small percentage in relation to the overall #s of violent crime. Solution? Ban people. Do it for the peepul! :p I'm going to rally the EarthFirst!, ALF (Animal Liberation Front), Greenpiece (or is it Green Peace) and other Tree Hugger groups.

I get two things from this...

If you're carrying, you're probably ahead of the game.

Many "crimes" aren't crimes. i.e., Joe shoots the guy who is holding up the stop'n'rob, who just announced that he was gonna execute every bleep in the place... Bad decision... Joe gets to go to the grand jury to explain his actions, and it takes six months for him to get his 1911 back, and while it all ends okay. it does go down in the books as a crime...

Keep in mind that the statistics include _everything_. Some 16 year old kid hops out of the car that just got pulled over and points a nine in the general direction of the state trooper becomes a "teenage victim of gun violence" by the time the numbers are massaged.
