I'm hoping you HK USP owners can help me on a future purchase...
1) What's the most preferred weapon for concealed carry? DAO or SAO? I've only owned a DA/SA before (with the first pull DA and the rest SA). I'd prefer one consistant pull and am unsure which to go with.

2) Do the USPs have plastic or steel sights?

3) What night sights do you recommend, how accurate are they whence installed and how hard are they to install?

1) This is up for individual opinion, but I prefer single action with a safety, which is why I carry either a 1911 or an HK p7.

2)My USP Tactical has metal adjustable sights, my Compact has metal fixed sights

3) The previous owner of the Tactical replaced the factory sights with Trijicon (model #HK06) night sights. I didn't do it, but according to him he just tapped the factory sights out and put the new sights on.

Many like the USP because it gives you the option of either DA/SA or cocked and locked carry. However, if you want it for concealed carry, you may want to look at the USP Compact because it is smaller.

I'd also look at the HK P2000 with the LEM trigger (http://www.hk-usa.com/index.jsp?loc=101&SITEID=A&PartNumber=704202). It gives you a single trigger pull that is lighter than a traditional DAO.

My concealed carry pistol is an H&K USP Compact 40 and I would suggest you give it strong consideration. They perform flawlessly, eat any ammo you feed them and never fail to feed or go bang.

Again, on #3 waterhouse has the correct info. I replaced mine with the same tritium night sights and they work great and only required some nylon or brass punches to do the job.

You won't regret getting a USP compact for an excellent carry gun

1) I carry variant 1, but lots of people like dao with the LEM.

I'm looking at both a USP Compact for concealed carry and a USP Tactical for duty.

I can't stand the DA and SA trigger though.

The USP series can be carried cocked and locked as mentioned. The trigger really smoothes up with lots of use.

I carry my USP compact hammer down and safety off.

Factory sights on the USP's are steel.

I can recommend both Trijicon and Meprolight nightsights. Installation is easy with a non marring punch and a good non marring vice set up. My trijicons are right on for windage, and right on for elevation when I put the front dot "on" what I want to hit.

These are great pistols.

1: This answer will be subjective at best. If your preference is one consistent pull, then you are probably looking at a variant change.
I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned the LEM trigger yet. It's somewhat like a DAO. One long first pull. Subsequent shots are subject to a very short reset, so if you are a DA/SA guy, it works for you, or, you can let the trigger out and shoot it like a revolver. I have 4 LEM trigger USP's. The variant changes at HK don't take long at all, the last one I did was 8 days door to door, within the last month. The LEM trigger is also adjustable for pull weight from 8 pounds down to 5.5...

3: Try the Tru-Glo tritium fiber optics. They're no more expensive than Trijicons, but are several orders of magnitude brighter.

1. For carry, I'd look at either the Compact or either the P2000 or P2000sk models rather than the full size USP. These smaller models also are available with the LEM trigger which is nice.

2. as mentioned, sights are steel.

3. I installed adjustable MMC tritiums on my USP and like 'em. It's not the sights that make it accurate as much as the inherant accuracy of the gun itself and the shooter doing the sighting.

Only one warning about the Tru-Glo sights. Some of the members over at the XD forum had trouble when their cleaning solvent melted their sights. YMMV

:scrutiny: I recall there being a prominent warning on the instructions for the sights about just this possibility. Where I'm from, that's what we call a clue... ;)
