The M240 has been replacing the M60 in most instances. Its basically a BAR action turned upside down and made beltfed.

Also, note that the M240 is known just about everywhere else in the world as the FN MAG.
We used it for years as the co-ax on tanks, and are just now realizing that the M60 was a piece of trash...
(Well, OK, some of us knew it years ago, Uncle Sam is just now acting on the knowledge.)

I just did some testing on one of our engineering guns this morning. Just one of our nifty toys.

As for being short. Not sure where you get that idea, M240's are long and cumbersome. Due to the bottom ejection they're not shoulder fireable. They come in a variety of configurations, check out the link.

He's probably looking at the 240 on the loaders hatch on an M1. Those are shorter than the ground mounts.

Yes, the ones I saw were mounted near hatches, though I couldn't tell from the videos they were loaders' hatches. The barrels look like they are only about as long as the to the fitting (gas port?) and they have handles like this 240 D model (http://www.fnmfg.com/products/m240/m240d.htm)
