Hi, All:
Has anyone used the APP black powder substitute? I tried it for the first time last Sunday at a black powder shoot. I fired aproximatly forty shots of 45gr. of this APP behind 440. round ball, with a patch of pillow ticking of aprox. .020" with #11 CCI caps, in a Browning Mountain Rifle. All went well for the first ten or twelve shots, and then I had a missfire, where the cap went off but the main charge didn't. with a new cap, the charge went off normal. Acouple of shots later, I had a strange typ of ignition, where it sounded like a flintlock, where there was the cap ignition and a short pause, and then the main charge ignited, like normal. I have tried to figure this out, but have not come up with an answer. after the first few shots I blowed threw the bbl of the rifle, as I use to do with black powder, to softnen the residew in the bbl., I don't know if that had anything to do with the strange missfire, and the delayed ignition, or not. The last ten or so shots, went perfect, altho I did not blow threw the bbl., and used Rem. #11 caps. I had not shot the rifle for about twenty years, and had only used black powder, back then, and don't remember ever having a missfire. I had tried Pyrodex, back 20 years ago, with very poor results, and the APP substitute powder is the first substitute powder that I have tried since. Any ideas on what the troubles were?
