Dumb AWB question?

Ok, if all those "assault weapon" ban rules only apply to semi-automatics and not bolt guns then couldn't one just remove the operating rod (M1A, FAL, AK, etc.) and just cycle the gun manually? That way you could have all the goodies! Or maybe I'm just delusional....

I think you're not allowed to have more than 2 or 3 of the evil features at once (bayonet lug, pistol grip, flash supressor, 10rnd mag, etc). They make pump ak47s for California people, lol.

This would be tantamount to meeting emmisions requirements in your car by tearing out the engine and pushing it.

Well, the theory being that if the shtf you could just reinstall the piston and be ready to rock. Until then you would just cycle it manually. Just wonder what the ATF's view would be on a 'disabled' semi-auto?

Good one Chris.
I'll have to remember that; it'll come in handy for other topics as well.

I do believe there's still a prohibition. They don't consider that a different firearm, just a firearm with a part missing. I can't quote specifics so I don't know for sure, this is just my own fuzzy memory.
Maybe if you welded the gas tube solid so you couldn't put it back in . . .
Even if it worked, there's precedent for the BATF to consider it a prohibited firearm if you keep the op rod and thus have "all the parts necessary" to build the prohibited firearm again. That's how they treat full-auto parts.
