When they first came out, Taurus ported the barrel of all their Total Titanium Revolvers. Is that still the case or can they now be ordered without the porting?

I don't know, but I can say that I like the porting on my Taurus 450.

Taurus seems to be backing away from porting - at least in some models.

While the 'Fuff is not a fan of porting, he can see that the practice might have a place when it came to ultra-light revolvers chambered to use Magnum cartridges (except the .32 H&R Mag.). But then, I don't think that larger Magnums combined with fly-weight guns is too bright either. But to each their own.

Anyway, keep checking the Taurus website for updates. you may find that wahtever you want is available with or without porting.

I bought a titanium 651 earlier this year. It was manufactured in 2004. It was not ported, despite being shown and described as such on the Taurus website.

Agree with Old Fuff. I see the point of porting on Taurus's superlight Magnums, e.g., the wacky Titanium .41 Magnum (!!) snubby.

What I, and lots of others, objected to was Taurus's policy of mandatory porting on guns that clearly didn't need it. For example, the little alloy .32 H&R Mag. Model 731, the steel-frame .45 ACP Tracker, and the steel-frame Model 445 snubby in .44 Special. These are all really cool revolver concepts that, for me, were ruined by mandatory porting. (I hear the current run of 731s is unported; a good sign.)

Revolvers are loud and flashy enough. Don't port them unless it's genuinely necessary. Especially if we're talking about potential defense guns like the three just named.

My blued-steel 445 (.44 Special/5-shot/2") is several years old, and not ported. If it had been I wouldn't have bought it. I seem to remember that the stainless version might have been ported. In any case I was suprised to find it, and jumped quickly when I did. :what: :D

I remember reading in an article by Wiley Clapp that Taurus made some unported 445s early in the model's production run. Then they switched to all-ported. That's a rare gun you've got, and a good find.

Porting on a close-range SD snubby .38 seems really stupid, but Taurus does it anyway. :confused:

It seems to make a difference on my Taurus 450 (45LC) especially considering that it weighs just a shade over 17 oz. I've compared the flash at night against a Ruger Blackhawk in 45 LC with a cut-down 3 inch barrel and the difference is negligable. However, the follow up shots (ie getting the barrel back down on target), when taking into account the difference in weight, are noticeably faster with the Taurus. All in all, the ports are a plus, imo.
