Girls Shot in School Crossbow Attack

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Two Australian teenage girls were shot and wounded with a crossbow at their school on Thursday, with the arrow passing through the chest of one of the victims and into the legs of the other, an ambulance official said.
The girls were attacked by a teenage boy who was tackled as he then tried to light a petrol bomb, a witness told a Sydney radio station.
"One young female was shot in the left chest, the arrow exiting her left shoulder," the official told Reuters.
"The arrow then went into the thigh of the other female and then into her other leg. Both legs were impaled by the arrow."
The girl shot in the chest was in a critical condition, the other in a serious condition, the official said.
The caller to a radio station said the girls were chased around the school, Tomaree High School in Salamandar Bay on Australia's mid-east coast, before they were shot.
The student "tackled this offender while he was trying to light a petrol bomb," said the unidentified caller, who said he had a nephew at the school. "It could have been horrendous."
Police said they had arrested a teenage boy over the incident, but no charges had yet been laid.
