What do y'all think of the S&W 1076

A local gun shop has a Smith and Wesson 1076 in excellent condition for $549. I'm thinking of trading in a safe queen or two for it. Anyone have one? What are your impressions?

I've seen them at $350.00 ish at KY Imports a while back...great strong and accurate 10mms! Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the main and recoil springs with HD ones from Wolff Springs.

I have its bigger brother the 1006 and I love it. It's built like a tank and can withstand stout reloads. I paid $400 for mine.

I've been looking for a 1006 (I have a 4506 - ditto on the tank thing).
The premium price is because I live in the Commonwealth. Because of our AG, any handgun not on his list can't be sold by a dealer unless it was here before '98. Smiths in 10mm are hard to come by.

I have both (as well as a 4006 and 5906). The 4506 is hell for stout, but the 1006 is considerably heavier in construction.
If S&W 10xx series are rare in your area and you are not likely to see another 1076 for less, go for it. It may be a premium price, but it's worth it if you like the gun. FWIW, I paid $525 for my 1006 and $450 for the 4506; $300 for the 4006 and $350 for the 5906 (both police trade-in). I'm still looking for a 5904, 1066 and 1086.

I had one once. I like the caliber but the gun just didn't fit me :( S&Ws semi autos just don't fit me well...but that was my only gripe w/ that pistol! So, if it fits you & the price won't break the bank, get it & enjoy it!

I bought it. Must be a popular (or hard to find) gun - while we were doing the paper work two different people came in and asked to see it. Good thing I got up early.
I took it to the range on the way home. It's a great shooter, quite accurate. I managed to coax a couple of 2", 10-shot groups out of it at 30 feet in spite of the single-digit wind chill. It has noticeably more recoil than my 4506 but not bad by any means.
Will this take the same grips/mags as the 1006?

I used to own a 4516-1. Accurate & ate just about anything I fed it. I sold it, because I could never get past the feeling of gripping a 2x4 with a pipe sticking out of 1 end when I aimed it.
To each his own - if it fits for you, the price isn't bad.

You did good. I've been wanting to get one of the S&W Tens for a while. All my Tens are 1911 style. 10MM rocks!!

If it were any other 10XX model, the grips would be interchangeable. But since the 1076 has a frame-mounted decocker, it is the red-headed stepchild of the group. 45 magazines do not interchange with 10mm whatsoever. S&W still manufactures the 9-round 10mm mags. Expect to pay ~$40/ea.
Enjoy your new pistol!;)

In 1992, about the time that the FBI was dropping the Smith & Wesson 1076, the Kentucky State Police were adopting it as an issue sidearm for uniformed carry.
Other than the FBI, they were the only major law enforcement organization to ever adopt this particular model. They had excellent results with the 1076 using the original 180 Gr. 10mm round as opposed to the so-called "FBI Lite". Smith agreed to supply parts for it for only ten years and the KSP phased out the 1076 in 2002 going to the 40 S&W Glock G35.
FYI, when they were being phased out, there were several hundred of brand new, yet unissued, 1076's on hand with the KSP emblem rollmarked on the slide . These ultimately went to various outlets so some of them should still should be available but probably at a premium price.
