Shot show get together?

Are we going to get together again this year like we have done for the last several years?
Any locals want to ram rod it again for the reservations. The last place was pretty neat but maybe we can find something that is not so noisy?
How about the steak place what ever it is called. Read some good revues last year on it. Will have to look it up.
Sat sounds the best like last year but I am open for either night. I will be in town fri and sat myself.
Count me in for 2 to start it off.
I plan on giving more time to the gun show at mandalay bay as I think it is the same weekend again.

Can you be more specific on where you would like to eat John ?

I know we do this every year, but could people post their suggestions on where to get together ? I wasn't really happy with the get together last year. We basically just sat down and ate: there wasn't anywhere for everyone to get together and talk. Prior to eating, we didn't even know for sure who was part of our group. After dinner, most people just got up and left.
How big of a consideration is price ?
How big of a consideration is location (close to strip ?).
Obviously there are lots of great restraunts in and around the Las Vegas strip. There are also obviously tons of places to get together in Las Vegas.

You got the exactly same feeling I had.
I liked the food but between the prices, noise and everything else it made it hard to visit anybody other than the one or two folks around you and you new some of them anyway.

I think close to the strip is the best for several reasons but mainly it is close for some of the vendors that have to stay untill they close up and most folks from out of town are already close by.

I am really open to suggestions and even the chinese place was really a more friendly place to talk to everyone without the noise. How is Lowery's? not that is where I want to go but curious anyways.

50 Shooter & Owen we will get the time and dates down before everybody heads out there. I might be starting this kinda early but its right at 2 months when we leave and we most likely should make the resrvations soon after the new year or shortly after that.
Owen we had in the past two years made in around 7 ish I believe so everyone had time to go back and clean up before they came over and we were done early enough to still go out on the town if we wished. Last time it was a sat as I think most folks were in town for that night also.

So 444 shoot us some ideals as we have a little time and we should get some more feed back from others before we have to make arangments.

I plan on having a good time in Vegas. I hope to get all my bussiness done on friday and early sat and then spend time at the gun show as that was a very nice show and I had no ideal it was like that at the Mandalay bay.

if you have a rental car in Vegas for SHOT Show, go eat at the Claimjumper in Henderson. It is at I-215 at Green Valley on the N/W side of the intersection, right across from Green Valley Ranch.

bring your appetite. they have racks of ribs that hang off both sides of the plate and eclairs as large as footballs. it tops any of the casino buffets.

Lowry's is OUTSTANDING. But, it is going to be at the higher end of the mid-range price scale. And, I would say that it would be more appropriate to dress better than jeans. I don't know what the restraunt is like as far as people being able to mingle: I have never been there.
I used to work at a fire station right by there and one time a year they come to the fire station and put out their full spread for the firemen. The food was to die for. Some of the best I have ever eaten.

If we want to mainly get together to visit we have other options besides restraunts on the strip. A bar would probably be a better venue for visiting. They have food and people who don't want to drink don't have to drink. On the other hand, if the main point is eating and visiting is just a sideline, a resturant would be a better choice.

I agree that we should meet someplace different. The "Hole In The Wall" was great but difficult for conversation. I will be at the Shot Show again this year and would like to meet up with the THR crowd again.
Many shooters are hearing handicapped and have difficulty in crowded, noisy environments. However I want to express my appreciation for the fine job the organizers did last year. I had a good time with some very nice people. The bar has no value to me nor does the free wine. I like good food and good people. The "Hole In The Wall" had both.

CAPTAIN MIKE
January 10, 2006, 01:30 PM
I can 100% make it if it's NOT on Thursday night. I strongly urge a place that is NOT noisy. The whole point in getting together is to get acquainted with each other and to be able to hear each other's comments and ideas.

The Chinese place we went to (just off the Strip) a couple of years back allowed for plenty of parking and was quiet enough where we could all hear one another in conversations. I'd be happy to go there again.

I'll be hosting my friend Rudy DuFour (NRA Action Pistol national coordinator) during the Show, and if possible I'd like to invite him to join us.

106rr

Any updates on the Shot Show THR dinner? May I ask if last years organizers were treated fairly? Did everyone pay their fair share? Sometimes when there are group dinners people forget to pay up. Did that happen last year?

Jon Coppenbarger
January 15, 2006, 10:34 AM
Yeah I believe they were treated fairly. A few of us made sure the hat was passed for the one or two who stiffed the rest of us. NO I was not happy with having to pay around $50 for a plate of calimari and two drinks because of the one or two who stiffed us.
I know who one of them was because I was sitting beside the person who will stay un-named. I watched on purpose as I was pre warned and they were right. Put it this way I saw no one from this forum do it.
I really think the only concerns are having a place that is a little less noisy so we can talk.
We are about 3 weeks away and I have not heard of any more plans.

I so have plans on one night but it does not mater if it is on a fri or sat.
Do have some personal friends I know who are going this year that I spend time with for a week or two at the national matches so my evenings are pretty well taken.
If dinner is going to be planned we need to get it done.

The last place was pretty neat but maybe we can find something that is not so noisy? May I suggest: picnic in the desert?

Bring a grill, some chuck, chicken wings, pork bbq, potato salad, beans, cole slaw, beer, a table or 12, chairs ... what ever else.

Dang, I wish I could make this. It's not the best time for me. (Within 2 weeks of the end of phase 1, 2006).

I may still yet.

Sounds good, '870. We'll each put some in our checked baggage and you can pick us up on the strip with your bus.

What's that? You won't be there. No problem. We'll try your idea next year.

For the rest, again, I would set something up if I knew Vegas. But I don't.

Who of the "maybes" are going for sure? Let's count noses and see if we need a big room (or at least a reservation) or whether we'll just show up at a Taco Bell.

No one has answered any of the questions I asked in my first post of this thread.
I am not going to waste my time making suggestions when I don't know what anyone wants to do.
First and foremost we have to decide if this is about a "get together", or this is about eating. If it is about eating, I can do that anytime.

Chris Rhines
February 3, 2006, 09:09 PM
Uh, 444, not to pick on you, but it looks like most of the posts to this thread (after yours) went along the line of "get together, not just eating." I thought mine did, anyhow...

I agree that a bar would probably be a better venue for visiting/conversation/swapping lies. Decent food would be a bonus. Decent beer would be a requirement, at least for me. :D

Ok, how about McMullan's ?

On Tropicana, across the street from the Rio.

They have good food IMO.
I go there to drink.
A buddy of mine held the XMAS party for his cowboy action shooting club there in December. They have an alcove where you could get maybe 15 or so people into a semi-private area. This is probably a mile west of the New York New Yord/MGM/Excaliber/Tropicana (corner of Las Vegas Blvd. x Tropicana).

Looks like I will probably be going. Another possibility would be Bucco di Beppo, on Flamingo (north side, east of Kival). It's a long walk from the strip, but do-able. They serve family style (big heaping plates to share) and the prices are pretty good. With a little bit of notice, they could accomodate a lot of people.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it is Italian food.

I am really easy. Any time, anywhere, Thursday-Sunday, I'll be there.

I think that eating and talking would be good, but I'm flexible. Irish, Italian, whatever! I don't mind taking a taxi, if necessary. An hour after the show closes would be good. Early enough to meet others later, if you need to.

Sounds like Friday or Saturday evening would be best. Shall we take a head count?

I would be happy to give anybody that needs it, a ride. McMullens is a few miles off the strip. In my other post, I mistakenly reported that it is across the street from the Rio: it isn't. It is across the street from the Orleans.

I am sure we can make arrangements for anyone that needs a ride to get one.

Sorry to get to the thread late! The Irish place sounds fine if it's a done deal, I'm there.

BUT, let me share a bit of wisdom I picked up at a reunion in LV last year. Buffets can handle large groups with ease. Restaurants freak out when they get a group of 30, they watch you like a hawk, and are afraid you are going to tie up valuable table space all night yakking. They kind of pressure you to finish up and move out.

LV buffets don't even BLINK for 30 guests in a party. You pay in advance, so the single check nightmare/getting stiffed is completely avoided. You can stay for as long as the buffet is open, they don't care. And, you can push tables together anyway you like.

I attended a reunion for about 75 folks at the Harrah's buffet, it was ideal. The staff didn't mind, they loved us. We pushed together our tables into our own little clans the way we wanted to, we weren't jammed into a little room. There was no time pressure, and we could "graze" on the buffet lines for hours and hours....and we did! Talk, eat, schmooze, ogle, talk, eat talk joke laugh etc.

And no bill to divvy up at the end.

It was good to see all the high roaders at McMullen's on Friday. I enjoyed meeting all of you.
And they were right: you can walk for miles each day to see the stuff on display. it was great.

funny moment of the show (besides the two talking deer at one of the booths): I was talking to one of the guys at a knife display, and he said someone had shown him a challenge coin. One one said it said "black ops", and at this he had rolled his eyes wondering what bull was on the other side. and when he turned it over, it simply said "I was never there".
