I noticed that my AR15 is leaving a tiny dent in the primer when chambering a round. It's a small dent, but it is scary all the same. Obviously the firing pin is hitting the primer slightly, but not enough to ignite the round.

Anyone know possible causes or solutions to this problem? I'm guessing this is not normal behavior. It's a DPMS upper and the ammo is American Eagle .223.

it is from the pin hitting the primer when you drop the bolt..normal, and there is no solution, dont worry over it at all.

As stated above, completely normal. This will happen with your AR, my AR, anybody else's AR. Nothing to worry about. If it does worry you, adhere to the four rules, then there's nothing to worry about.

Normal. If you reload, just make sure you don't use a "soft" primer.
I think CCI makes a milspec primer but I can't remember the number.

A: They are special rifle primers made to military sensitivity specs. They are one method to reduce the occurrence of slam-fires in gas-operated, military semi-auto rifles. See the Speer Reloading Manual for more details. No. 34 and No. 41 primers are MAGNUM primers.

Another good choice for the AR is the RP 7.5 primer!

Most modern military rifles have,"free floating firing pins". The AR, and AK are just two. When the bolt closes, the firing pin is not retained by a spring or anything, and therefore will impact the primer, leaving the,"dent". Should be no problem using mill spec. ammo/primers, and listening to the reloaders:) .
