Backyard body armor testing.

I'm Sorry that I don't have any pictures to go with this, but it just kind of happened.
The head of security at work came walking into the shop the other day with two level II Kevlar plates, with the request that we (my friend and I) test them against, of all things, field points and broadheads.
We didn't have any clay, and my friend declined to just stand there and let me shoot at him, so we tied the first plate to one of those soft(er) plastic deer targets, you know, the kind you shoot w/ a bow...
From about twenty yards, with a 70 lb. draw weight, the carbide field tips just bounced off the Kevlar. We moved in a little closer, and had the same result.
Broadheads penetrated all the layers of Kevlar, but only about 2mm of the point made it through the other side... I was surprised by this, as I figured the razors would slip right through the vest.
My friend has a lisense to hunt w/ a crossbow, so of course we had to give that a try. The little carbon bolts bounced off as well...
Next, we broke out the handguns. The Level II plates stopped ever handgun round (9mm, .45, .40, .357) as well as a .50 black powder slug. Rifle rounds from .223 up ripped through no problem.
I know this is not very exciting w/o pictures, but it was surprising to me that the vest stopped arrows out of a modern compound bow... for what it's worth.
PS. My political science professor just said that the NRA has no moral purpose... :banghead:

Yes, Thank You. I'm surprised as well with at the results with the broadhead from the bow. Did you try one with the crossbow, and what was its draw weight?

I doubt the prof can even tell you the state purpose of the NRA...or even knows what the GOA is.
Trying to have a discussion with polisci instructors is a lot like trying to teach a pig to sing.
You might want to point out to him the NRA is not about morality... it is about politics... which it does quite well.
The moral issue is easy to defeat... assuming the guy can think honestly... which libs can't.

In a sivilized manner, point out what Pol Pot did to unarmed professors et al..
Did you happen to try an Ice-pick or Awl on the Kevlar...?
I'd figure the broad head would not cut the Kevlar, too much friction. Now if you had an awl or pick shaped head (you may need to make one) on an arrow or bolt, that may have done a bit of penetration..

He noted those concerned with abortion have a 'moral' purpose, whatever side they happen to fall on... so go figure.

I gave it a stab w/ the Emerson I carry around, it has a kind of tanto point, and did not go through except for the very tip. I imagine an Awl would do the trick, I can try it tomorrow...
The guy on "Box of Truth" has it right, shooting stuff is fun :D

Were the crossbow bolts fitted with razor broadheads as well? I'd be surprised if a powerful crossbow throwing a broadhead bolt at 300+ fps couldn't go through the vest; my xbow has a 185 lb draw and throws carbon bolts very fast...

Did you try a bodkin point?

Broadheads are an awful lot of surface area, and they don't deform the way a bullet does. I watched a couple of high-speed shots explaining just how a bullet penetrates a vest, and something as solid as a steel broadhead has too much surface area and too little elasticity. Even with a real sharp edge, it's still an awful lot of surface to push through a vest. Double that when you put the kevlar in front of something harder than real flesh. You might try it on something more like the clay the box o' truth guy did. I suspect that a sharp broadhead will get more penetration on level II when it's hanging in front of something softer.
