Well I got around @ $130 to spend on a new weapon. I already have a nice SW .22 plinker and a Beretta 97FS, now I want something new. Thinking of getting my chl soon so something carry size is good, but also no shotgun in the arsenal either.:(

I was thinking about a CZ52 due to the price/quality ratio. While looking at SOG website I found a tactial shotgun for $129.95, the YL12 Home Defense/Police Shotgun :

Anybody have any exprience with this, I dont even know who makes it?

Any other good ideas for not a lot of money?

Might be okay. I'd buy a used 870 or Mossberg first (preferrably an 870). You should be able to get a used Remington 870 Express for $150.

How do you feel about Norinco?

Get a used 870.

these are made in china, they are a mediocre copy of an ithaca 37. you can get them at the chain sporting goods stores for $119. i bought one for a trunk gun, and the first one i had was machined out of spec, and the forend retainer ring came off and wouldn't stay tight even with loctite. i got a replacement right over the counter. the metallurgy appears to be second rate, but functional.
ya gets what ya pays for.

I have one and it works pretty well for me as a HD shotgun. One word of caution for you is that every once and a while it will not feed properly. Probably my own fault though for short-stroking it :scrutiny:. Other than that a good gun.

Estate sales, auctions, pawn shops (much as I hate them).

I gave $159 for my Maverick 88 at Wal-Mart.....

For that gun your going to give

$130
+ $15-$20 for shipping
+ $15-$20 for transfer

= $160 to $170......doesnt seem like a very good deal to me and Im sure the Maverick 88 is just as good, if not better.

pass on the knockoff and get a real ithaca 37. you see em on auctionarms.com sometimes. mossberg 500 or rem 870 is good. ive seen mossberg 500s go for as low as 70 dollars on auctionarms.

Big chain sporting goods stores (not oshmans)

Pawnshops (they have tons of shotguns and will haggle)

Walmart sometimes.

One thing American gun makers excel at is making pump shotguns that last forever, work under all conditions and cost less than a week's pay for a working person.

Bass Pro right now is offering an 870 Super Mag with synthetic furniture for $200 after rebate.

Used 870s pop up for less after hunting season. Sometimes you have to look around but the deals are there.

Get an 870 or other US made pump, your great grandchildren will thank you for it ....

Check your local Wal-Marts, too. They sometimes do pretty low clearances you can grab.

I'd gotten an 870 Super Mag with wood furniture for $175 at a local one. (With a $50 rebate on top of that!)

The other advantage of getting a "real" 870 or Mossberg is that there's endless accessories specifically for them, stocks and foreends you might like better, shell holders, light/laser mounts, mag extensions, sights, and finding replacement parts and barrels is easy. No fussing about "will it fit this?"

Sporting goods, depends where you live. Some states, the chain sporting goods stores still have ALL sporting goods.

In others, (here) they don't have anything but toy airsoft guns anymore. :barf:

I have one, got it as a back up 12 gauge riot gun to my primary Mossberg 590. It turns out that it fits the wife much better than the Mossberg, having a shorter reach, and she is capable of using it for HD. It was rough out of the box, seemed gritty in the action, so a complete disassembly, cleaning and lube was first on the list. A little smudge of grease at apropriate parts of the mechanism seemed helpful (the Mossberg runs on nuttin' but CLP). It is prone to jam if not racked "with authority" otherwise it works fine. Apparently it doesn't like to be babied. It's not finely finished, but this baby wasn't built to win any beauty contests.

The steel receiver seems solid and heavy, compared to the Mossberg's aluminum. The bottom-eject action is a hoot, for those who are southpaw or simply appreciate the mechanics of a gun as well as what it is capable of. All in all, I feel like I got my money's worth.

Echoing what has been said, buy a used Remington 870 (or Winchester 1300, Mossberg 500); there's no guessing about who made it or whether the steel is good. I prefer the 870 because of past experience buying them used. I bought one for less than $200 and could have left it as is, it started out as a good gun. But I replaced the barrel and stock to make it a better gun for trap shooting. Wow. A used 870 is something that new 870's want to be -- nicely broken in.

Well, I decided to pay a little extra and get something that will leave me no regrets, the 870. NOW, I am new to shotguns so Im trying to decide which model to get.

Dave mentioned Bass pro having a sale on the Super Mag for $200 but I cant find the guns on their website? Someone also mentioned a sale at Academy and they're local so I will drop by there to chekc those out.

My question is, can I use it for more than just putting holes in BG's? I want to be able to do the occasional bird hunting with it and skeet. The choke details are kinda fuzzy to me, I see imprved choke etc, what do I need for my wants?

TIA:neener:

I see that Remmy has a $50 rebate on the Express super Mag. Now can I shoot all shot shell sizes in there or just 3.5in?

oldschool

It will chamber any 12 guage up to 3.5" shells, 2.5"'s if you can find them, 2 3/4" most of the time 3"'s no problem and 3.5"'s for mutant birds. Aguila mini-shell's (i.e., a novelity load I've heard that they have some feeding problems 1.5 ~1.75" shell length).
My Express 870 in 20" Rem Choke barrel does; Home Defense, rabbits, 3 gun Matches and breaks the occasional round of evil clay birds and it will still do doe a deer if I ask it to. Good call and have fun.
