I'm out of town that weekend. :( Count in me for the next one, though.

April 5, 2003, 11:44 AM
Well, maybe not the bells. ;)

This range is worth a long drive. It's a nice drive, too. It'll remind you that we CANNOT concede this state to the Useful Idiots, It's just WAY TOO NICE!

Subject, of course, to the weather co-operating. But hey, it's after Daylight Savings, so the range is open until 5 p.m.

Sorry to hear it if you can't make it this time, but we gotta start someplace. We might consider rotating locations if we can do this regular, like. Giddayup, li'l kitty!

If the weather's good, the place'll be packed, and parking gets tough. Should be room, but you might have to walk a bit to get to the range you want to use.

If you're bringing jugs for the plinking range, Fill 'em ahead of time if convenient. The cease-fires are never long enough, it seems.

NOTE the first: There IS a 100-yard plinking range. This is where I REALLY polish my handgun skills. If the light's right in the afternoon, you can see bullets in flight. (The sun's going down-ish behind you. They weren't little gray flies buzzing over my sights, they were the backsides of .38 special 158-grn SWC's.)

NOTE the second: Last time I visited, the only 7.62 x 39 the range had for sale was Wolf. The Monster cannot abide Wolf, they stick so hard they have to driven out with a mallet and a brass rod. I won't forgive a cheap price when my gun goes home with cases stuck in it. YMMV. Also, this was MONTHS ago, and they might have re-stocked with something else. The range wasn't impressed with it either.

NOTE the third: The range has a good caliber selection for sale, but not much load variety, mostly a single choice except for the most popular rounds. All (Except the Wolf. :barf: ) is good factory stuff like Winchester USA brand White Box, Remington, PMC, and Federal new ammo. Prices are adequate.

REMEMBER, drive at a SLOW WALKING PACE while on the grounds, or The Man In The Booth Will Yell At You. Be Told.

And Dinner sounds positively smashing. :)

I'll sure try to make it.

April 5, 2003, 08:45 PM
Ok so plan B is Saturday the 19th.

I'm all over that.

April 5, 2003, 08:47 PM
can I cold carry? (gun in holster, unloaded, no mag)
or is it like every other range on the planet except for halo.

April 6, 2003, 12:03 AM
Date change noted.

Atek3: If you have a gun off the bench during the Cease-Fire, you WILL get your head bitten off. They'll Stop The Range on your account.

"No Handling Or Transporting Of Firearms During The Cease-Fire!"

Like you said, like every other range on the planet. :)

April 6, 2003, 12:08 AM
I plan on showing up early and parking the QuarterBoreMobile at the far end of the 100yrd range; I'm staking out a spot on the far end.

Jim March
April 6, 2003, 12:42 AM
I'll be there :).

April 6, 2003, 12:48 AM
I'll be there :)

April 12, 2003, 02:44 PM
Merged to new thread with correct title.

April 12, 2003, 03:23 PM
I'll be there once again, assuming i get a ride

April 14, 2003, 11:47 AM
Well it looks like the weather will cooperate so I'll be there- intend on parking at the far end of the 100yd. range, just look for the big black QuarterBoreMobile.

I'm going to try and get there early as the range slots seem to fill up pretty early.

April 15, 2003, 06:32 PM
At this stage I will be there.

But... with 5 FEET of new snow in Tahoe I might be going skiing.

I am so torn...

April 16, 2003, 10:51 AM
anyone know any arguements i can use to convince my friends to go?
Most of them are totally dragging @ss on this one.

As I have no car, this jeopardizes my attendance.

April 16, 2003, 11:23 AM
I'm working on finding a way there.. my bro from LA is in town i just learned and his boy turns 1 on wednesday 4-23.. so my parents and everybody will be having a easter / birthday party..

again, cant commit at this time yet, but if saturday frees up I'm there.. also FYI if rain or clouds (its pretty high up in the mountains) they close the range as well...

April 16, 2003, 12:10 PM
ElToro- you're absolutely correct; I've been fogged out at Los Altos many times. I intend to call up there before I leave to see what the weather is like.

Fingers crossed its looking like it will be a go.

'Gonna wear my goofy straw shootin' hat and Hawaiian shirt. Look for it.

April 16, 2003, 02:45 PM
I'm going to try to make it :)
What time do they open?

April 16, 2003, 02:52 PM
9am - 5pm.

Viking Warrior
April 16, 2003, 08:28 PM

April 19, 2003, 01:08 AM
Any Kind souls going to be rolling through the berkeley area on their way to the range?

I live north of the campus and have no car... which unfortunatly means no attendance, unless I could snag a ride from one of y'all. You can shoot my XD-40 :)

April 19, 2003, 02:34 AM
We'll be there around noon.

Sorry Atek, won't be anywhere near your neck of the woods.

Just spent a half hour printing targets. I might sell some Barney ones!

I hope I bring enough guns- 5 enough for 2 of us?

April 19, 2003, 03:39 AM
Wish I could make it, but the in-laws are here and we're doing a big Easter lunch on Saturday.

April 19, 2003, 03:48 AM
Sorry, can't make it this weekend. I live close but have a commitment.

April 19, 2003, 11:13 AM

You should have seen the look on atek3's face and Sven when Jim and Kieth Unloaded a Magazine of .308 hollow points on one gallon water buckets filled with poster paint..
KAbbLLoooM KAAABBLLAAMMO.. It looked like the fourth of July..
Hey guys, next time remember to bring up some milk jugs ans poster paint..

April 20, 2003, 11:09 PM
Did someone take a picture!!!!:what:

April 20, 2003, 11:24 PM
Pictures, we don't need no stinking pictures. I'm uploading MPEGS as I type. We don't mess around.

Click images for ultra-high res, if you really need to get closer for some reason:

Atek3 shows how he gets down (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/atek3.jpg)

Hand_Rifle_Guy shooting Sven's CZ75B with (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/hrg.jpg) Hakan Custom Grips (http://www.imageseek.com/hakan). HRG is the only guy I know who, upon getting a hold of my CZ, immediately wants to shoot it in Double Action mode to try that aspect of the trigger.

Hand_Rifle_Guy shoots his old Mark IV Webley (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/webley.jpg)

Results of shooting plastic jugs at 100 yards with the Valtro. (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/jug.jpg) I learned that 9mm is much flatter-shooting that .45... for 100 yards I had to aim 1/2 to 3/4 'front sight heights' higher than the target. For 9mm, eerily, I could aim dead on and hit the targets.

April 20, 2003, 11:24 PM
And now... the MPEGS! I told you we don't mess around.

Shooting jugs of tempra and water with rifles. (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/jugs.mpg) We learned that pistols don't even move the jugs... they slowly 'bleed' out the water. Rifles, as you will see above, have a different effect.

Have you ever seen a shotgun range more beautiful than this? (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/scene.mpg) Didn't think so!

Here's where you learn how Hand_Rifle_Guy got his nickname. (http://www.imageseek.com/sven/2003_04_19/7.62x39.mpg) HRG pretty much explains it all here.

April 20, 2003, 11:59 PM
That shotgun range is making me droool!!!!!

That jugs were awesome to watch going splatter!!!!

April 21, 2003, 09:54 AM
Had a "blast" last Saturday meeting a bunch new people. Thanks Sven for setting it up and supplying the great weather. We are up at the tin can range just about every Saturday so come on by and kill a few water jugs with us.

April 21, 2003, 11:44 AM

I had no idea shooting could be so fun! The Tin Can range was so fun, I had an ear-to-ear grin the whole time.

Now I _need_ to get my M1A built so that I can make those jugs explode like you guys.

I can see myself spending many more Saturdays up there... ;)

April 21, 2003, 01:29 PM

Sorry I missed this one, looks like all had a great time. We spent the weekend shuttling the kids between grandparents and aunts & uncles for Easter festivities; lots of fun, but not hollow point into tempera-paint-filled-milk-jug fun.

What do you think about a THR Bay Area shoot on the same day each month, say the second or third Saturday?

Also, there used to be a TFL shoot at Reeds indoor range the first Monday of the month, what do you think about reviving that as well?

April 21, 2003, 01:48 PM
Looks like everyone had a good time, sorry I missed out. A last minute duty swap got me stuck for the weekend. Pleas post the next get together and I'll give it a shot.

April 21, 2003, 06:00 PM
It was lots of fun. Great to meet you all. Thanks for putting it together Sven.

For those of you that weren't there, I am madkiwi's fiance and my head is poking out from behind folks in that group picture.

So I am actually registered here but this is my first post. ;)

April 21, 2003, 07:10 PM
Pulling a lurker out of the woodwork would have to be the best side-effect of the shoot!

Welcome to the 'visible' side, labrat!

Now, if my girlfriend would just register...

April 21, 2003, 07:32 PM

I originally felt that a bi-monthly outdoor meeting would be a good starting pace, but if there is enough clamour, we could try to make this a monthly event... if anyone is interested, please speak up.

Otherwise, I'm aiming for mid-June as the next Bay Area Shoot, and I will post early so as to encourage a high turnout.

Regarding the "First Mondays" deal at Reeds back from TFL days:

After shooting outdoors at a range like Los Altos, there's no way an event at Reed's could compete for a large gathering. Not even REMOTELY close to the same experience for a group shoot.

All that said, Larry, I'd love to start meeting up on a monthly basis at Reed's, perhaps for some friendly competition?

Mondays were a tough night for many folks, and I feel that a Wednesday or Thursday would be better for turnout.

Everyone - please chime in with your thoughts.

April 21, 2003, 07:38 PM
Once a week drive from the city is little to much for me, heck I did it every day for two years when I was working there when it was National and I hated that drive even then.

But a monthly or bi-monthly rifle shoot sounds like a deal.

April 21, 2003, 07:57 PM
may i suggest 'not saturday'?
That conflicts with a lot of IPSC and highpower matches. I almost didn't attend the los altos shoot b/c of the highpower match.

April 21, 2003, 08:49 PM
I almost didn't attend the los altos shoot b/c of the highpower match.

It always has to be about you, doesn't it? :D

April 21, 2003, 09:41 PM
well duh. ME ME ME!

April 21, 2003, 10:37 PM
If its not on the weekend of May 9 or June 8 I will be down. Even if it is May 9, if I am camping at big basin I will ditch my friends.

May 15, 2003, 12:28 AM
We're doing it again!

If you're in bump the new thread (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=274922#post274922) and let me know if you're in. Let's BBQ!
