I RECENTLY PURCHASED A BROWNING A-BOLT 7MM WITH THE BOSS AND NEED A SCOPE. I DON'T WANT TO SELL THE FARM BUT I DON'T WANT A PIECE OF JUNK EITHER.I ALREADY HAVE SEVERAL GUNS WITH EITHER A
3-9-40, 3.5-10X50 . AGAIN, I HAVE SEVERAL GUNS SETUP FOR SHORT RANGE SHOOTING (UNDER 200 YDS) SO I'D LIKE TO SET THIS ONE UP FOR HUNTING AREAS WHERE I CAN SHOOT BETWEEN 200 AND 300 YDS. I'D LIKE TO KEEP THE PRICE UNDER $ 400 BUT WANT A SCOPE THATS CLEAR AND I CAN SEE IN LOW LIGHT CONDITIONS. AM I DREAMING? NIKON, PENTEX, LEUPOLD, OR SIMMONS, ANY SUGGESTIONS????? THANKS

I have two 7mm Rem Mags with Leupold scopes and have used them in the wide open spaces out west to the woods of Alabama, and have been very happy with them. One is a 3x9x40 Vari X IIc on BAR, the other is a 3x9x50 VX- II on a Remington 700. I got the 40mm for $160 and the 50mm new for $300. I bought the 40mm used off ebay and couldn't get it zeroed, sent it back to Leupold and they fixed it right up and I only had to pay shipping. I am looking for another scope with a higher magnification and think I will again buy Leupold. I've had a lot of scopes and between the warranty and the price, they're hard to beat.

I am alittle perplexed; a 3x-9x or a 3.5x-10x scope ought to be about optimum for shooting all kinds of game between 200 and 300 yards. What magnification of scope did you have in mind?

Personally, if I were setting a up a rifle dedicated to the 200-300 yard range I would mount a 4x or a 6x fixed power scope. In my case a used Burris or Leupold since they have lifetime warranties - in your case a new one ought to be well under your $400 threshold.

Cowboy;

I'm with LAK. The only thing I can think of is there's some consideration you're not telling us.

I'm in Montana, 2 to 300 yard shots aren't all that unusual in my experience. I normally put a 3-9X, 3.5-10X on my dedicated hunting rigs & get along just fine. The longest shot on a game animal I've ever taken was an antelope buck in 2002 at a lasered 470 yards. One shot = dead goat. The scope was a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10X on a Winchester classic new model 70 in .30-06. Conditions were ideal, I don't normally shoot at those distances, but the product of much practice is knowing you can if necessary.
