Hint: It ain't Fieldsboro. Talk about living in the belly of the beast... I'm less than ten miles from there!

Talk radio station trashes Princeton
By: David Campbell , Staff Writer 04/04/2003
Station 101.5 puts town on least-patriotic list.

Ranking Princeton the least patriotic town in the state, New Jersey FM radio station 101.5 paid a visit to downtown Princeton on Thursday to teach people here a thing or two about the proper way to wave a flag.

The radio station parked its Big Yellow Van outside Rialto Barber Shop on Nassau Street around 2 p.m. and set up a table to distribute yellow ribbons and American flags to passersby.

The stunt was part of a publicity campaign that recently targeted the South Jersey town of Fieldsboro's mayor, Edward Tyler, for upholding a ban on displays on public property, including patriotic yellow ribbons.

Radio duo Craig Carton and Ray Rossi — known to their listeners as "The Jersey Guys" — polled listeners who ranked Princeton the least patriotic town in New Jersey, according to the station's marketing and promotions director, Ray Handel.

Highland Park, which ranked second in the poll, can expect a visit from the Big Yellow Van sometime today, Mr. Handel said. Fieldsboro wasn't included in the poll because the status of that town's patriotism — abysmally low, it seems — is beyond question.

According to Mr. Carton, it's been the incidents of antiwar protest and activism here that riled his listeners.

"In Fieldsboro, the town's getting its bad rap because of the mayor, but in Princeton it's because of the people," Mr. Carton said. "The sense is that every day you open the paper there is something antiwar, anti-American going on in Princeton."

According to Princeton Borough Mayor Marvin Reed, "There's no question about the fact that we have a lot of active dialogue going on in this community, both questioning as well as supporting the activities in Iraq."

But Mayor Reed added, "This town has always supported our GIs and our fighting men and women."

The Borough Council on Tuesday night authorized the Spirit of Princeton to put up American and POW-MIA flags along Nassau Street this week rather than wait until Memorial Day, Mayor Reed said.

Mr. Handel, observing Old Glory flying over the street on Thursday and noting that the flags weren't there the day before, said, "At least we convinced them to fly the flag."
Mayor Reed, you ought to look at the letters to the editor page of the Prisstown Packet, where you're being castigated for failing to pass a resolution against the war.

And don't forget about the presidential palace, er, Governor's Mansion...
