I think there is a "gotch" in this survey. It almost caught me. It is towards the end so attention is flagging when one gets to it.

It is the "failure to store correctly" question. Looking at the answers some of you don't think "gun control" (as in retaining control around children) is part of responsible gun ownership. The trickiness is compounded because such laws try to make the legitimate owner responsible even if the gun was stored properly and try to excuse young adults as being only children.

This may be why it is an English assignment instead of a Math assignment.

In general, do you feel that laws covering the sale of firearms should be made more strict, less strict or kept as they are now?

B. Less Strict

Register all handguns, at the time of purchase, so that they could be traced by the police when necessary for criminal investigations.

B. Disapprove Most crime guns are obtained illegally anyway, and would not be registered. Such a registry would leave gun owners open to abuse by authorities.

Require all handgun buyers to pass a criminal background check, whether they are buying the gun from a gun dealer or a private individual; at a store or gun show?

B. Disapprove

Ban the possession of handguns except by the police and other authorized personnel.

B. Disapprove

B. Disapprove Why single out firearms on this? If a child gets hold of a chainsaw and hurts himself, should the adult owner of the chainsaw be held criminally responsible?

The government should do everything it can to keep handguns out of the hands of criminals, even if it means that it will be harder for law-abiding citizens to purchase handguns.

I want to thank you guys for all the answers. I know that the answers from here will be biased, but I'm also going to spread the survey around different places where I live. What I believe my professor wants to see is what kind of people are giving the answers, not just the answers themselves, such as "x% of white males wanted less strict gun control, while x% of black males wanted stricter gun control". I personally don't like having to do this, but I gotta do it anyways.

Fill in what ever personal information you want.

Responses: B, B, B, B, B, B, D, A.

The problem with some of these questions are that firearm laws vary by state in terms of purchase and whatever. Hence, that influences the response somewhat. One person may be comfortable with very limited government oversight in one state but be strongly opposed to stricter regulation in another state.

Hmmmm. If you're implying that our answers are "biased" you're probably correct.

If you implying that results you'll get from your fellow students are "unbiased" you're probably incorrect. I would say that most of those are "uninformed" at best and "naive" at worst.

After a quick scan, I figure that the average age of the respondors here is roughly 40+/-. Which is roughly twice the life experience of your fellow students. In additon, the vast majority of members of this board own guns and comply with a myriad of local, state and federal regulations with every purchase and for some of us, we have to comply with even more laws just to possess said firearms years after they've been legally purchased (e.g. Illinois' FOID card requirement). There are several FFL's (Federal Firearms Licencee's, the guys who sell guns for a living) on this board, you might want to have their answers as a subset.

Who knows more about complying with guns laws, the people who choose to exercise their right and have jumped through the various legal hoops to obtain guns or someone who has not had to comply with those laws and therefore has no basis of experience to adequately form a opinion ??

The question on background checks should actually be two questions. Since we already have submit to backgrounds when purchasing from licensed dealers, it isn't likely to change.
Your question should have addressed whether or not it should include private transfers, in which case I would answer "No".

Hey, I am 22yrs old, Christian (for those who care, Anglican) white (Polish-Irish) and Male.

I think Laws should be made less strict, the people can take care of themselves.

Hells no should you have to register anything!

I don't like the idea of the background check... but it won't keep me up at night if they keep it (where I'm from, that is).

Every eligible person who desires a handgun should buy one.

Not for trigger locks

hmm... holding adults responsible... it would depend on the age of the child. if a five year old did something to himself, then I think the 'rents were negligent, but if it is a 16yr old, then he did what he wanted.

If criminals want guns then they will get them. Don't make it harder for us.

Yes!!! We have the right to own!

Cheers.

Judging by the questions, you've created a good, unbiased survey.

I'd be interested in the results and some background on where you posted it for answers. Are you posting it on any other websites?

And also what your teacher has to say about the survey and results.

A. Approve ???? No Way!!

Exactly what good comes from a Law that holds Parents criminally responsible... as if they have not already been punished enough by loosing a child. Punishing them only extends the damage to others by taking that parent from other children and loved ones. Accidents happen... Life is not safe or fair... or always just.... Do you really think a Law like this will lessen the small chances that this will happen... Do you really think that it would happen to the same parent a second time.... We already have too many D&*%d laws...

In general, do you feel that laws covering the sale of firearms should be made more strict, less strict or kept as they are now?

A. More Strict B. Less Strict C. Same D. Not Sure B or C (the question is a lot more complex)

Register all handguns, at the time of purchase, so that they could be traced by the police when necessary for criminal investigations.

A. Approve B. Disapprove C. Not Sure B - disapprove Registration leads to confiscation. Just ask the folks in Canada or California....

Require all handgun buyers to pass a criminal background check, whether they are buying the gun from a gun dealer or a private individual; at a store or gun show?

A. Approve B. Disapprove C. Not Sure Disapprove. The "gun show loophole" is nonsense created by those who wish to ban all private sales or transfer of firearms.

Ban the possession of handguns except by the police and other authorized personnel.

A. Approve B. Disapprove C. Not Sure B - Disapprove. Nonsense....

Require all guns sold in the US to have a trigger lock, a device that prevents a gun from being fired until the device is unlocked and removed.

A. Approve B. Disapprove C. Not Sure B - Disapprove. Way to easy to get the camels nose under the tent to force the use of these devices, giving a Washington DC sort of situation where firearms maintained in the home must be disassembled, and hence are unavailable for home defense.

Hold adults criminally responsible if they fail to store a gun safely and a child harms himself or someone else with that gun.

A. Approve B. Disapprove C. Not Sure B - Disapprove. The definition of "store a gun safely" is way too open to interpretation. If a teenager steals his dad's gun from a locked cabinet, was it stored unsafely because it didn't also have a trigger lock?

The government should do everything it can to keep handguns out of the hands of criminals, even if it means that it will be harder for law-abiding citizens to purchase handguns.

A. Strongly Agree B. Agree C. Not sure D. Disagree E. Strongly Disagree E-Strongly Disagree. Criminals will get weapons regardless. Just ask the good folks in the UK.

In your opinion, does the US Constitution guarantee individual citizens the right to own firearms?

A. Yes B. No C. Not Sure A - YES. Re-read the Second Amendment. However, it actually says that "NO LAW can be created to restrict such ownership."
