sgian dubh for a friend

A good friend of mine wanted a sgian dubh to wear with his kilt. I could have gotten lots of decorative pieces fairly cheaply, but I wanted to get him something that was not only attractive, but that was actually a good knife that he would be able to use for lots of daily tasks. Knifemaker and good friend Shane Justice seems to have managed to fulfill both missions ably:

Nice one, John. Our Scots ancestors knew something about knife design. Does Justice have a website?

Dave, he doesn't, but I can send his email address to anyone who's interested.

Here's a pic of Shane working on the wee knife:

Well, I know Shane used 52100 steel, as he did with the Soldier's Knife (I just blued the blade of that a few days ago; I'll take a picture when I can). I'll see if
I can get a little more info from him (again)- I've been so busy this semester, about the only thing I can really remember is past, present, and future conflict with China!

Gun blued knife blades are the BEST looking Knife steel there is. For exactly the same reason hot blued hand guns are "gun art" at its finest.

People talk about how fragile the finish is but its only because the can not see the beauty of honest wear.

I have never seen any gun as comforting and confidence inspireing as a blued 1911 with high spots in the finish worn off by years of competant cleaning and polishing.

Knives are the same way. Nothing compares to the look of blade steel with the finish or patina worn back from the edge by use and skilled sharpening.

Nice knife.

ecos, I got the information from Shane.

The sgian dubh was forged from 52100 steel, and has asian buffalo horn and stag on the handle.

The pictures don't do it justice. :D

Actually, Shane, I had a question (not specifically about this knife): what type of hammer were you telling me about the other day? It sounded like it might really make the job a little less labor intensive..

Welcome to THR, btw!
