I lived in Sydney in the early seventies and I'm saddened every year when my wife and and I return to Australia and see what the city has become. There's still much for the Aussies to be proud of, but much to regret, also. Just like here in the good ol' USA.

The left-wing attitude prevalent in Australia hasn't yet run its course, I'm afraid. It's MUCH more liberal/left-wing than here.

The article is interesting, but I think most here are making too much of it. To pretend that organized crime is the cause of anti-middle eastern sentiment in Australia ignores the serious problem with racism that exists in that country. It was founded by the british in the heyday of "scientific racism", its first inhabitants justified the wholesale abuse and slaughter of the aboriginees with racism, and today, racist remarks in the workplace and on the street are the norm. I've been having more than a few laughs lately at these theories about this or that cause. Anyone who lives there knows what the problem is.

I have to wonder how many people who are now making comments about the validity of these pieces on Australia have spent any time there. First off, there's the whole "Muslim" thing in this article...I'm not sure of the stats in Australia, but of all the Lebanese expatriates I've met, not a single one has been Muslim. Every single one has been christian...I'm quite certain that most of the Lebanese who have left lebanon are in fact christian. Yet there are hooligans citing muslim terrorism to justify their crimes right now in Sydney.

Second, the mobs aren't looking for lebanese gangsters...they are finding normal folks riding the bus and going about their business. That kind of sick desire to hurt nonthreatening people because of the color of their skin isn't created by gang activity. It happens because some folks have skulls so thick that they simply cannot comprehend the notion of "personal responsibility", whereby we judge people as individuals and not by what some other guy with the same skin color did in another part of the city.

I doubt barbarianism has a great deal to do with religion. The barbarians are those who find a part of the world that's more prosperous, polite, civil, and tolerant than their homelands, move there, and prey upon its citizens.

I doubt it makes much difference whether they turn Sydney into Beirut or Los Angeles into Mexico City North: the hordes arrive, dig in, and reduce everyone who actually contributed to the area to victims. When we do everything short of strip-search little old blue-haired grandmas before letting them board airplanes, but hand out drivers' licenses and college tuition discounts like penny candies on Hallowe'en, we make it abundantly clear the values our nation was founded upon have been replaced by convenience, the endless quest for entertainment, indifference to our own survival, and the demand for cheap lettuce.

A lot of us at the High Road proudly keep and bear arms in defense of our lives and property; as a nation, however, we seem to go out looking for predators to take advantage of us.

The "barbarians" are vicious parasites who use violence to get what they don't deserve, rending the social fabric. What we are really seeing is a cultural manifestation that exists in many places, across time: young men who have never been taught to rise about their instinctual responses to the world around them. Not only is education anathema to them, anything that requires deliberate work, patience, and deferred gratification is anathema. You have to wonder about the cultures that raised these uncivilized souls, about their parents, about their social values.

The Cause Behind the Crisis

Writing in the 1880s, the German philisopher Friedrich Nietzsche predicted that an age of destruction and barbarism was coming. "What I relate is the history of the next two centuries," wrote Nietzsche in his notebooks, later published as "The Will to Power." In those same notebooks Nietzsche wrote of a tremendous socialist explosion. Later, in his autobiography, he said, "The concept of politics will have merged entirely with a war of spirits; all power structures of the old society will have been exploded. ..." Nietzsche explained that the 20th century would bring forward a new Caesarism and super-dictatorships. "There will be wars the like of which have never yet been seen on earth," he predicted.

And how did Nietzsche foretell the future with such stunning accuracy?

Nietzsche saw that the West was beginning to lose its Christian faith. This loss was metaphorically described by Nietzsche as "the death of God." To be more precise, this death was a murder. In fact, Nietzsche said we were the murderers -- the crucifiers of God. In his parable of the madman, Nietzsche wrote: "But how could we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun?"

Nietzsche suggested that mankind had begun to stray into the "infinite nothing," into the "emptiness of space." He suggested that civilization was growing colder, that a new darkness -- a new dark age -- was upon us.

"How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers?" he asked. "What was holiest and mightiest of all ... has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us?"

In this metaphorical depiction, Western man lost his faith, his innocence, his belief in right and wrong, his very sense of the world. And this loss was a case of murder, pure and simple. In fact, this murder was the beginning of a tremendous crisis -- the "crisis of modernity." Nietzsche saw that in losing its faith, in turning against God, mankind had no choice but to take the place of God. In other words, Nietzsche saw that a great horror was about to begin -- the horror of a nihilistic totalitarian dictatorship in which the dictator usurps the place of God.

"Nihilism stands at the door," wrote Nietzsche in 1885. In our day, in the year 2000, nihilism has opened the door. It has entered. It is in our midst.

Allan Bloom, in his book "The Closing of the American Mind," described the effects of modern nihilism on American university students. These effects include philosophical relativism, a lack of inner motivation, and a superficial niceness which does not partake of real moral commitment. Today's students, he explained, know less and less. They are cut off from Western traditions, from the political wisdom of our Founding Fathers. Today's youth, said Bloom, are "much slacker intellectually."

It has been said that mankind is always one generation from barbarism. If we fail to transmit our heritage, our understanding, our concept of right and wrong, our faith in God and country, then the outcome will be barbarism. This is how, metaphorically speaking, we have crucified God. This is how we have murdered our country, betraying the legacy of Washington and the Founding Fathers. Apostasy and treason have appeared in our midst. As it happens, this twofold crime was not accomplished by the criminal negligence of Generation X. Setting aside the notable exceptions, this treason belongs to an earlier generation -- a generation that neglected its duty to transmit faith and patriotism to the young. This negligence must, by necessity, bring in its train an age of destruction and chaos. And all this comes at a time when thermonuclear weapons are the main instruments of war.

"Skepticism regarding morality is decisive," wrote Nietzsche. "The end of the moral interpretation of the world ... leads to nihilism."

And what is nihilism? How can it be described?

There are three forms of nihilism. Each of the three afflicts us today. Each has appeared in our universities where the country's elite is trained. The three forms of nihilism can be listed as follows: metaphysical nihilism, epistemological nihilism and ethical nihilism.

The metaphysical nihilist is the most deranged of the three. He denies that reality exists. Since reality does not exist, everything is automatically subjective. To the metaphysical nihilist all statements of truth and all moral pronouncements are "negative" and "oppressive." A vague existential haze envelops everything. In this instance, schizophrenia has been philosophically induced. It is a case of insanity by precept.

The epistemological nihilist denies the reality of objective truth. For this type of nihilist there is a reality, but the human mind cannot know it. This leads to an amusing contradiction. The epistemological nihilist says there is no truth; but then, even this proposition cannot be true.

The ethical nihilist denies any objective ground for moral principles. In other words, for him there is no right or wrong.In fact, ethical nihilists believe that morality itself is an unreasonable imposition. Abortion, for example, is a perfect instance of ethical nihilism in action. One justifies murder in the name of convenience. The ethical nihilist is guided by lust, greed, pleasure -- whatever comes along. With ethical nihilism passion and desire become the guideposts of life. That is why marriage and sexual restraint are the first things to disappear with the advent of moral nihilism. It should be noted that freedom, for the ethical nihilist, is freedom from morality.

And this was the freedom that Karl Marx was reaching for.

If you read the letters of Marx, especially those written to Engels, you will see that the modern founder of communism was a moral nihilist. It is interesting to note that he believed in an objective reality. He also believed there was an objective ground for truth. But for him there was no objective morality, no spiritual dimension. For him there was no God.

In the 20th century, as the West slowly descended into moral relativism, revolutions broke out on the periphery of civilization -- in Russia, China, Southeast Asia and Africa. These revolutions, for the most part, were secular and grounded in the ethical nihilism of Karl Marx. It is no wonder, therefore, that the leaders of these revolutions always proved to be criminals, murderers and gangsters. Communism is a materialist philosophy. Its attempt to form moral categories -- in Soviet Russia and Red China -- has always been a cynical exercise. The unrestrained passions of dictators brought hell on earth. Stalin and Mao became gods. In reaching for divinity, these man-eaters realized the need for a devil and a hell. In keeping with the necessities of Marx's atheist formula, the West became the devil and the labor camps served as hell.

Carl Jung, one of the founders of modern psychology, once suggested that communism was the concentrated essence of the Antichrist force in history. Like Christ, the Antichrist promises salvation to mankind. But Antichrist delivers the exact opposite of salvation. Instead of peace, Antichrist brings war. Instead of prosperity, Antichrist brings poverty. Instead of salvation, Antichrist brings destruction.

It was a fatal symptom of our own inward decay that we did not proceed against the enemy of our civilization at the outset. Our own rottenness had progressed to the point that our initial efforts against communism degenerated into retreat. First, there was the White army in Russia and the feeble Allied intervention. There was the surrendering of Eastern Europe at Yalta. There was our retreat from the Yalu in Korea. There was our retreat in Southeast Asia and Africa. We allowed whole regions of the earth to sink into totalitarian slavery and degradation, where they yet remain.

The ordinary wars and politics of other nations and continents are not, properly, our business. But communism forms an important exception. As Aleksandr Solzehnitsyn observed many years ago, if your neighbor's house catches fire you are obligated to help him put the fire out. For we are told to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, and a fire in our neighbor's house is certain to spread until our own house is burned.

Communism is not dead and the fire is not out. Materialists animated by gangster instincts rule the world's largest country -- Russia. In the Far East the world's most populous country -- China -- is also ruled by criminals. Communists, as ethical nihilists, are spiritually deranged. And in both Russia and China these people have the nuclear button. It is within their power to wipe the United States off the face of the earth. In other words, the fire yet promises to spread.

And yet, to this day we parlay with the gangsters. We equivocate and we temporize. We make excuses for their ethical lapses when we should have come to the rescue of the Russian and Chinese people while such rescue could have been effected. But now the situation is far gone. We have come to the point of covering our eyes and pretending the problem does not exist.

Our lack of moral resolve at the outset led to a progressive abdication. We have made a pact with the devil. We have signed treaty after treaty with the enemies of mankind. We have maintained a temporary prosperity by appeasement.

Unless we rediscover what is real, what is true and what is right, we are doomed. Readers of this column write to me. They ask me for a solution to the crisis. Well, here are the keys to the solution: Reality is something that doesn't go away when you stop believing in it. The truth must be upheld. Learn what is right and uphold it.

Our civilization is failing because we no longer respect reality, truth or morality. This is the essence of our modern nihilism. And it stems from the collapse of our faith.

Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of
De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of
communism, and until recently published the De Land
Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting
the public to the dangers of communism in America.

At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD,
under unanimous consent, the following "Current
Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt
from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:

1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative
to atomic war.

2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging

4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of
Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not
items could be used for war.

5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them
"censorship" and a violation of free speech and free

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by
promoting pornography and obscenity in books,
magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity
as "normal, natural, healthy."

27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion
with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize
the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a
"religious crutch."

28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression
in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle
of "separation of church and state."

29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it
inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern
needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a
worldwide basis.

30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present
them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the
"common man."

31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage
the teaching of American history on the ground that it
was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more
emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took
over.

32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized
control over any part of the culture--education, social
agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.

33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with
the operation of the Communist apparatus.

34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American
Activities.

35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.

38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the
police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as
psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can
understand [or treat].

39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental
health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over
those who oppose Communist goals.

40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage
promiscuity and easy divorce.

41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the
negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental
blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence
of parents.

42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection
are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that
students and special-interest groups should rise up and

social problems.

43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native
populations are ready for self-government.

44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.

45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States
cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction

The Lebanese immigrants throughout the 1970s were mainly Christians. The immigrants in the 90s and 00s have been, in the main, muslims.

Regardless of their religious extraction, Lebanese have come to be seen as a major source of crime and anti-social behaviour here in Sydney.

When parents of gang rapists blame 14 year olds for being gang raped and supposed community spokesmen and opinion leaders claim that it is the result of the influence of Australian culture on their young men that causes them to become gang rapists, the general population takes a grim view of the entire group that those people are supposed to represent.

When anally raping a teenager is called 'doing you Leb style', when cars that drive past the Lakemba mosque during Ramadan are stoned, when a fight between two teenagers in a school grounds results in 16 or more armed adult relatives entering the school to back up their lebanese cousin, when night clubs start screening patrons with metal detectors to keep out weapons, but don't screen lebanese because the bouncers are scared of being shot or knifed, when a large number of lebanese muslims are arrested for stockpiling chemicals to make explosives and for planning terrorists attacks within the city, it is hard for people to maintain an open mind.

It's starts not as racism, but as survival instinct. Groups of Lebanese males are seen as a potential threat, based on observed past behaviour. When the police fail to enforce standards of civility, when the community spokesmen play the race card and the regious card again and again, when politicians refuse to act because they are scared of being called racist, or are using Lebanese to stack political branches and intimidate opponents within the party, taking back the streets by whatever means becomes acceptable in the minds of many.

Unfortunately, the people who were attacked at Cronulla would not have been the perpetrators of the anti social acts that sparked this. The perps are probably the ones who went to Maroubra and bashed an old lady with a baseball bat and trashed 50 cars, stabbed a man at Woolooware, shot up the christian preschool xmas party, or burnt down the church in Auburn. There have been five attacks against churchs in the last week, and a photographer who attended the Lakemba mosque was bashed and lucky to escape with his life.

Seven years ago my brother in law was working with the publisher of a lebanese language newspaper, his boss told him that many of the lebanese coming in at that time were criminals who were at risk of execution by the various lebanese militias.

So far from news reports it appears that the police have only arrested anglo saxons for the violence. I don't agree with everything in it, but it's a bit of background on how a society can import it's own destruction.

Other than deportation of entire tribes, or actual enforcement of the law by the police I can't see a short term solution to Sydneys troubles. This weekend five beaches are officially closed so the police appear to be doing something, while Sydney swelters in 30 degree celsius heat.

This post should not be read as an attack on all Lebanese, or on immigration per se. Immigration policy should however screen potential sources of trouble. Each society on this planet produces enough criminals of it's own. Why import more.

The "barbarians" are vicious parasites who use violence to get what they don't deserve, rending the social fabric. What we are really seeing is a cultural manifestation that exists in many places, across time: young men who have never been taught to rise about their instinctual responses to the world around them. Not only is education anathema to them, anything that requires deliberate work, patience, and deferred gratification is anathema. You have to wonder about the cultures that raised these uncivilized souls, about their parents, about their social values.

"Vicious parasites" says a great deal. The "barbarians" I've referred to above do not contribute anything of value, have never contributed anything of value, and are extremely unlikely to begin contributing anything of value to either their societies of origin or the societies that foolishly tolerate their presence.

They don't pay taxes on criminal earnings. They don't participate in the political lives of the communities they infest—except, of course, insofar as they manage to corrupt and damage everything they touch. They enjoy the toys of western culture: the cellular telephones, cars, stereos, airline travel, boom boxes, et cetera. They haven't invented any of these things. They haven't contributed anything to their development. In many cases, they don't even pay for them, but simply steal them or buy them with drug money. The only "product" they appear to offer is mind-numbing drugs, and even that offering is usually surrounded by violence.

They enjoy not only the toys of western culture, but our freedom. Without our freedom, they'd be constrained. In their countries of origin, they'd be arrested and likely killed for selling drugs, stealing, raping, and so forth. The civil rights we've spent centuries creating and building up and defending give them room to maneuver. Western freedom of speech, for example, lets them cry, "Racism!" whever anyone tries to hold them accountable—and we're just fat enough and old enough and weak enough to let them get away with it.

As well as I can discern—I was surrounded by illegal aliens on all sides during the decade I lived in the People's Republic of California— their only value is entertainment. They want toys. They want freedom from accountability and responsibility. They want everything right this minute, and they want it for nothing. They're like spoiled five-year-old children; unlike spoiled five-year-old children, they not only can kill, but do. You couldn't pay me enough money to live in Los Angeles or Chicago or New York or Washington, D.C.: those are barbarian enclaves.

I'm sorry to say I believe our government is an active participant in the problem, not an agency offering a solution. Jorge Bush wants cheap labor, and seems to have no idea of the indirect costs the nation has to pay for inexpensively picked lettuce and grapes. Neither he nor the Republicrats nor the Democans seem capable of tallying up the welfare costs, the housing subsidies, the social workers' pay checks, the schools' costs, the costs of trying to police the barbarians, the costs of keeping them in prison, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Government is busy looking the other way from the barbarians' behavior while concentrating on keeping down the cost of unskilled labor. I see it at the federal level. I see it at the level of states that hand out drivers' licenses to anyone and everyone. I see it at the local level in ballots printed in every language, telephone systems available in every language, schools that teach so-called "multi-culturalism," and police department promotions based on fluency in Spanish.

Counting on government to stand against the barbarians is like counting on the coyotes to guard the chickens.

I'd guess across the board, Americans spend considerably more time each week watching television than partaking of the old values-oriented life of churches, social clubs, political parties, and the like. American "values"—I'm reluctant even to use the word—are shared through the media of television, video games, and movies. Without exception, those are forms of passive entertainment. There's no intellectual challenge in them. There's no intellectual content—period.

The barbarians want what they see on T.V. What's actually on television? Violence. Dirty third-rate sex. Endless sniping at our nation's traditional values. Pot-shots at capitalism. Passionate worship of money and all the flashy toys it can buy. Crime. More violence. Endless lessons in so-called "multi-culturalism." Slapstick masquerading as comedy. Quick bucks. More and more violence.

Those are the "values" being broadcast—and absorbed by people who, if they can read and write at all, have never so much as thought about reading a serious book in their lives. They're completely unfamiliar with abstract ideas. They've never discussed anything more complex than their immediate material wants and needs. We've made it abundantly clear to them they don't need to work for their toys and freedom from responsibility: after all, we've done everything from picking up the hospital bill when they were born to feeding them to giving them free school books to offering them free social work to housing them in prison at no expense to picking up the tab for their medical bills to... The list is endless—and all the while, we decline to hold them accountable for anything.

Is it any wonder they see us as fools? Is it any wonder they feel entitled to treat us as helpless, irresolute, positively willing prey? Is it any wonder they call home to invite all their friends and relatives to join them in the land of free money?

Considering how little we've done to defend ourselves against the barbarian predators, I'm afraid I have to conclude we deserve them.

I agree with just about everything you've said so well. Government, with its encouragement of entitlement and, now, the multicultural imperative, is a major force complementing the spiritual vacuity and ignobility of so much of our media and the unquenchable itch for adult toys that now seems to be what our "economy" is all about. We refuse to look at our mounting debt problem; in some circles this would be seen as a disease--it's definite 12-step country--but we are in gross denial as a culture. Deferred gratification and sublimation are concepts that would now be considered laughable by many, not fitting the gangsta "Get rich or die tryin'" philosophy we pretend to abhor but exploit and humor and unconsciously absorb as mainstream. We are Addict Nation, and even after 9/11 our first concern was to "keep consuming," not, as some of us might have hoped, to get real, gird our loins, and mobilize to Fight the Barbarian.

I do think some of us deserve the barbarians--but not all of us. How many of that second group there are any more we will have to find out.

You people need to read this. Never before has there been a better anecdote to demonstrate that "evil triumphs when good men do nothing."

A few stern ass beatings 10 years ago could have nipped this whole thing in the bud. Spare the rod and spoil the child indeed. I hate police brutality as much as the next ACLU lawyer, but that doesnt mean that there arent situations in which it is the most appropriate way of resolving a social problem.

If arabs started dealing drugs on my block and terrorizing local residents, I can bet you that it would be a race between the sheriff and the local residents to see who could turn them into collanders the fastest. Tolerance of odd but harmless customs is one thing, tolerance of barbaric behavior is another.

You voice a view many of us would agree with. But let's be realistic. The America of 2005 is full of special interest pressure groups with well-staffed legal teams, sympathetic media advocates, and mysterious funders with deep pockets (probably George Soros and his satanic minions). Cutting the Gordian Knot is an appealing solution, but it's likely to end up these days in expensive law suits, possible jail time, and strident charges of "discrimination."

This is a culture war. It behooves us to find the real fonts of power that promote this insanity and systematically pierce the veil and attack them by all legal means. We need to see this problem in strategic terms and focus our energies where they are most likely to effect real change.

This is (with a few cultural exceptions, the rapes) standard immigrant development of organized crime in the face of some societal racism and lack of access to the controls of power. The PROBLEM is that in the US in the '30's the various local, State and Federal governments involved weren't afraid to make the line very clear. Sure the gangs could buy protection and influence and run things in their own communities but when they started interfering with the "decent people" they were quashed violently. That quashing lowered the natural view of them as an outside "threat" to the locals and created breathing room for peaceable interaction, which led to eventual assimilation. (of course the immigrants have to be willing to assimilate for this to work)

Unfortunately, THIS wave of immigrants came to the party after Western governments got (as was stated) overrun by social progressive ideals to the point that violent criminal behaviour must be excused due to its racial (immigrant) nature.

Try to crack down on what are clearly just thugs (religious or not) and you, the State, are accused of being racist by the nannies. So you sit on your hands and (as also said) try to appease them rather than busting skulls and enforcing decent behaviour on the road to eventual societal acceptence and assimilation.

As long as criminal behaviour is excused or justified on cultural basis and the appropriate response to that behaviour (not the group) isn't applied, the separation between the larger society and the immigrants will continue and increase. If the government makes it violently clear that thuggery by ANYONE will not be tolerated, the door to assimilation will open again.

You got it right there Carebear. I grew up with lebanese, they were just other kids to me, as were the vietnamese, chinese, greeks, italians, etc, possibly they were a little politer as their parents were more willing to smack them for disrespect. In the last decade the situation has changed, law enforcement has not done it's job and as a result the wider community is willing to use mob justice. For example, the gang rapes were occurring for two years with regularity, but the police made no public statement warning girls that this was occurring so that they could avoid those areas.

I've spoken to a variety of people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds over the last week, with one (indonesian) exception, all thought the riots a bad thing, but necessary, that they sent a message to the lebanese community that anti social behaviour will not be tolerated. I guess if mob justice is the only justice available, people will use it.

Part of the problem appears to come from the top down. The sheik of the lakemba mosque has lived here for over 10 years, does not speak english, is on the record for making anti jewish statements, was the only muslim leader in Australia to refuse to meet with the prime minister to discuss anti terrorism laws and recently travelled overseas to meet with members of hezbollah, a known terrorist organisation.

I disagree with some of the points regarding operational policing matters -

i) the author describes a "British-style intelligence unit" whereas in reality a Borough Intelligence Unit in the UK always has a dedicated Unit who acts on the intelligence recieved. From his description it appears that they didnt.

ii) the author also condemns the ending of separate units (Drugs, Vice and so on). These units arent as successful as a bigger unit with more responsibilities because criminals dont just do one type of crime, and a bigger unit means more resources with which to hammer them when you get something - "Boot em, dont spatter em" as it were.

The rest of the article contains many good points, albeit they are points that will be forgotten by those in power, for whom not being seen as racist is of such vital importance. Its come to a sad day when you can say that the French have a better leadership than the Australians.

Re your point about intelligence, Peter Ryan was a British import, IIRC he ran a police academy in Birmingham before coming to Australia. Thats the problem though - as happened in Bradford and Oldham here in the UK, mainstream politics ignores complaints of this kind so the only alternative is those criminal/racist elements like the BNP and NF over here - noone else listens because to even criticize is to be racist, as the disaster that is the Immigration system shows.

Even when you get a unique set of circumstances and the locals act on their own (as happened in my home town where a group of Iraqi Kurds were dumped on the Caia Park estate, given wildly preferential treatment, were involved in a few run-ins with the locals and many more rumoured "incidents", then the Kurds attacked the local pub en masse with knives and sticks were beaten off by a huge and very angry mob (Caia Park was and is a very tough neighbourhood) and - literally - ran out of town) the locals were and still are percieved as racist (despite the fact that they next week ran the BNP out of the town too, cos they were English :D ), even though their complaints had been ignored for at least a year, leading to a buildup of tensions which exploded with predictable results, as seems to have happened in Sydney.

I have to say I was taken by surprise by the original posting. I, like most Americans, never realized the problems that were growing in Australia.

I would disagree, however, that the problems with gangs in the US are anywhere near the problems being experienced by Australia. I think that's primarily due to the hardened stance and programs set up against gangs and gang violence that was started in the US in the late 80's. The programs that have been established in most local as well as federal levels have proven to be pretty effective. They certainly haven't wiped out gangs, but it's clear both in terms of intelligence on gang membership, street enforcement and judicial enforcement, they've tended to constrain the problem pretty well. But then again, the political climate in the US is MUCH more conservative than most countries, which gives bigger teeth to law enforcement and the judicial branch in cases like this. However, it might do California well to consider where they are going.

I truly feel sorry for the Australian people, but until they decide en masse that the liberal thought process is what brought them to this state and demand a change, they are stuck. I hope the Canadians take note of what's happening in Australia as they are just now beginning to tread down that road of liberal "political correctness" over just punishment.
