I am curious to hear from those who have a GP WASR-10 on what they think about this weapon.

I am thinking about picking one of these up and would like some user feedback. I know about the magazine issues with the Century Arms mods, anything else I should be up on with these things?

This thing will be used for fun time at the range and maybe included a spot in the HD layout. Not wanting to drop the serious coin on a high end AK.

Thanks, any constructive info. appreciated.

I've one.

No cant, no trigger slap (WASR is said to have, GP-WASR not).

Only prob has been several mags not fitting in magwell- going to grind down mags. Wanted a VEPR, Robinson seems out. Aresenals are sweet but costly.

Nice laminate stock but got the T-6 and Galil forend package.

For what it is, it's well worth it. Good first AK. Hand pick if you can.

A friend traded for a WASR-GP this summer but didn't keep it due to back problems. The recoil was just a little too much and made his back hurt after a couple 30rd mags. He traded for a Chinese BWK-92 which is a 5.56x45mm(223 Reminton) chambered rifle that has lighter recoil so his back likes it better. The WASR-GP had the folding stock and all the parts on the barrel were on straight(front/rear sight, gas block). Comparing it to the hi cap WASR-10,SAR-1,and a SAR-2 that he owned and traded off in the last couple years I can say the quality was much better.
My advice with any Romanian AK rifle is to make sure to look over the front/rear sights and gas block to make sure they are on the barrel straight before buying. As trigger slap is really not a big deal that a little Dremel tool work on the sear or a new sear can't cure quickly.

I own a WASR-10 yes a century gun. but i guess I was lucky. no cant, no trigger slap and the mags feed perfect. at first the bolt binded up inbetween shots but now that the gun is broken in it will shoot flawlessly! this is one of the most fun plinkers i own. I posted a pic under another post about ak's

Guys, what is a good price for a WASR-10? The only local store selling one wants $450 for one with a normal stock and $499 for the folding stock model (though now I suspect one might be a normal WASR-10 and the other the GP WASR-10, I will have to check.) Are these decent prices if you consider shipping and FFL fee? Some local people I talked to seem to think it is a good price but everything here seems to be more expensive...

Unless it can flip over and do tricks that is NOT a good price. I paid $350 for mine at a gun show and it was refinished in DuraCoat.

Thanks guys! I am just going to have to start ordering everything online... Just a reminder to check FFL Transfer fees and shipping costs, before you decide to buy everything online.

I have found that some local shops price within Online price + transfer fee + shipping. In that case, I much prefer the ability to touch before I buy, and to get local service & support.

Some stuff it still makes sense to buy online. But not always.

I just a GP WASR 10 also with the front wood pistol grip. I refinished the stock and polished the bolt carrier. It came with a 20 rounder that fits perfect and the two 30 rounders fit loose. The 20 rounder is brand new Tapco one the 30s are used. I haven't have a chance to shoot it yet along with 2 SKSs I got.

I am not sure where you are, but the gun shows around Houston always have at least one guy with WASR's fairly cheap. Comparable to AIM at least. SKS's have been cheap lately as well. I have a VEPR already or I would get one. I may look for a 5.45 version, but not for a while.

I bought a GP WASR from AIM about a year ago. I'm perfectly happy with it. No issues to speak of, other than the typical unfinished wood and the metal finishing is not superior quality by any means.

I took the wood off and put about 8-9 coats of tung oil on it over the period of a week and a half or so. Amazing results, it looks great.

I've had zero mechanical issues with it. It feeds fine out of several different makes of mags. It's not as accurate as my Yugo SKS, but it's definitely fun to shoot and will still give me 3" or so at 100yds w/open sights.

It came with a bayonet, leather sling, ammo pouch, and 2 30rd mags. The accessories were kinda junky, but the mags work great. I went out and bought a rail mount and scope, but honestly can't tell any difference in accuracy between it and iron sights.

I'd say go for it.

IMO, GP-WASRs are a "best buy". Some have trigger slap, some don't. Some have a folding stock, bayonet and slant brake, some have fixed stock, bayonet, slant brake, some just have a fixed stock. The slant brakes and bayonet lug are added by Century after the guns are imported.

Just like any other AK, the GP-WASRs are simple to take down and operate and are stupid reliable. While some older WASRs (that were imported as kits and built on Century receivers) had spotty accuracy, the newer ones (using the Romanian receivers) are about as accurate as any other AK. From experience, all you really get with the "high-end" AKs is improved aesthetics.

Ah, a good report on a good rifle that can be had at a good price. Hope you like it as much as I do my Romanian. From your range report it seems you two are already getting on quite well.

thanks for all the good feed backs gents.

question - in the event of a trigger slapper, what is the fix?

also, i think i've got an idea what this is, but what is the actual definition of "trigger slap"?

Trigger slap is when the trigger slaps forward after firing. The hammer gets pressed back by the bolt, down onto the disconnector. The disconnector then can hit the trigger, moving it forward into your finger. Everything is normal except the disconnector slamming into the trigger. You can minimize it by cutting the disconnector as in the link above ^^^, or you can buy a $35 G2 fire control group from tapco (which gives a very nice trigger pull).

Edit: And if you get a newer GP WASR-10 it should already have a G2 in it.

Absolutely, read the manual. If its a Kobra and in Russian than take a look at this...
