I was just browsing the Smith an Wesson site and noticed a "firearm selection advisor"

I was surprised that they recommended a Walther PPK under their Custom Engraved Firearms - does Smith own Walther?

I was also surprised by the recommendations for civilian vs police CCW.

They recommend the following models for civilian CCW:

640 357 5 shot 23 oz
642 38 5 shot 15 oz
327 357 8 shot 21 oz
4040PD 40SW 8 shot 25 oz
340PD 347 5 shot 12 oz
990L 9mm 11 shot 23 oz

For LE CCW:

327 357 8 shot 21 oz
340PD 357 5 shot 12 oz
990L 9mm 11 shot 23 oz

I see no reason for the differences. For example, why not recommend the 4040PD to LE?

For big game hunting they recommend the Model 500 Revolver. :)

Walther and SW have a licensing agreement.

That is pretty ridiculous they'd make that distinction. CCW is CCW. LEOs are civilians anyway.

If anything an LEO might be more restricted in his chocies due to unreasonable department requirements.

That's what I was thinking.

In reality cops are more restricted regarding off-duty carry. Civilians (non-police) have it made. Carry what meets your requirments.

S&W actually makes the new stainless PPKs for Walther at their plant in Houlton, ME.

Everything they list is also current production as well. Like suddenly, steel guns are no good any more, they must be lightweight alloys or plastic. Whatever. It is easy to sound knowlegible while simultaneously making a fool of yourself while you follow the current trends of scandium and firepower, vs. the age old ABCs of CCW and defensive shooting.
