For all you CAS folks (Cowboy Action Shooters) out there.

I attended my first local SASS club match in August, and today I finally shot a stage clean! Bonus, my time wasn't even that slow. As a matter of fact I shot 3 out of 7 stages clean today. :) I am stoked, talk about a feeling of accomplishment. Just like everyone said, slowing down did the trick. I love this sport.

Next benchmark? A clean match.

Exactly what is CAS? Never heard of it.

Sound like fun though.

CAS stands for Cowboy Action Shooting. There are a couple of organizations involved in CAS, of which one of the largest is SASS, or Single Action Shooting Society, at 67,000+ members.

Basically we wear period cowboy dress, or the quasi-period dress seen on the silver screen cowboys, and shoot pre-1900 firearms. Most SASS clubs hold monthly matches where the shooters are divided up into possies, and shoot a course of fire which includes two single action pistols, a pistol caliber carbine, and a pre-1900 shotgun. You are competing against yourself, as well as the other shooters in your class, to get the lowest combined time minus penalties for misses and procedural errors.

That's what we do, but misses most of the flavor of how we do it. Colorful costumes are worn, and many spend as much on costuming as they do firearms, generally everyone is laid back and looking to have a good time. Friends are ribbed for misses and congratulated for cleaning a stage. Misses shoot as well, and are made to feel at home. Darksiders, slang for those who shoot blackpowder, relish in filling the stage with smoke and sometimes wrestle with making their smokewagons behave. Participants hold themselves to "The Spirit of the Game", which eschews gamey behavior.

If any of that whets your appetite, then find a group in your local area. If you don't have any clothes wear western duds, or whatever you have. If you don't have the guns then odds are someone will lend you some so you can try it out. You'll have a good time, I can almost guarantee it.

From what I've scene on OLN, you dress up like a cowboy and shoot guns. Great fun!
