So I picked thru what was there and with my self imposed $1000 shopping budget got:
A new in box Browning Baby Lightweight .25acp $200
A new in Box(!!!) 1928 manufactured 1908 Colt .25 $300
An all matching S42 Luger marked 1939 on chamber in 98% with holster and capture paper dated 1944 $500


Kinda an ecclectic selection, but came from a WW2 vet ,deceased:( ,

There were some mint .25 and .380 Berettas (50's style) and an 80% 1903 Colt (which I allready have a better example)

Had to let a beautiful 03A3 sporter go along with a new in box 70's Win .458 the both of which would have cost me another $1000!

How do you find out about estate sales? Also, since you're in Cali, do you have to go thru a FFL? Whats the process in buying firearms thru an estate sale?

Although I have a C&R license, pistols have to go thru Ca DOJ DEROS. I have a deal with a local place for costs.
The Luger is a pretty common Mauser variant, but if I was marketing it it would probably be worth $1000+ in the fine shape it's in!
The Browning is worth retail $400, and the 1908 Colt in it's tattered old box but 100% shape is worth $500+. But then the retailer gets their cut and you have to wait till it sells to get your $$$ sooo- I actually was giving the actual spot cash value of such treasures to the relatives.:)

I found this at a moving sale last year for $35.00. After I posted it here, I checked out some collectors boards; Value for the knife and sheath (which I have) is $500.00.

Not bad at all. I surely would have bought the Browning and if the capture paper is authentic and the Luger was not reblued or such, $500 was very inexpensive. You don't have to tell us if you don't want about how you find these estate sales, I tend to be guilty of hiding some of my sources too though I feel bad about doing so.

When I was 15 I wondered over to an auction. Among the old dishes and nick nacks was a perfect Civil War Spencer repeater 52 caliber carbine. The type that loaded from the but stock. I was the only one there who noticed it and I did not have a dollar to my name.

Lest you think I'm made of money and walk around with it coming out my ears:
After getting these 3 items I : put my Browning Baby 90% (I carry it!) Blued gun for sale for $225, I put my Mark 3 Remington 10 ga flare gun in 95% for $350 and a Unertl 20x scope for $ 600 on sale- they sold in 48 hrs! This JUST equals my expenses (deross) for my new acquisitions!;) I averaged 25% a year return for my investment of those items I sold!:D

I had my dad buy me a CSA Nashville plowworks cavalry sword and scabard
at an estate sale in Marshall Mo. about 30 years ago. I played with it and
showed it off to friends. I still have it and had it authenticated by
Butterfields in SF a few years ago. He payed about $30-$40 for it back then.
The current appraisal was a bit higher!;)

Yup! Before you buy them new S&Ws super magnums, Savages super triggers and such, better check out how much you LOST in 5 years of holding it. Versus the same price for a 40-50 year old S&W or the same in a Savage if you bought even 5 years ago.:rolleyes:
I don't think in a hundred years that MIM shoddy junk that the post 90s has brought us:banghead: is gonna be worth more than a turn of the century Saturday night special is today!
Just a hint where to INVEST your gun $$$:D
