Hello everyone, this is my first post here. My name is Kirk. I live in south central PA. I hunt on my dad's farm. It's an apple orchard with about twenty acres of woods to hunt on. My "stand" is four apple bins stacked on each other with a seat on top. I've got three of these stands placed on the farm.
Now to my topic- When I first started hunting my dad gave me an old Winchester .30-.30. It's a very good gun and I've shot three deer with it. I use the gun open sighted and I wanted a gun I could put a scope on. I could of put a scope on the .30-.30 but I didn't want to drill into it and put a side-scope on it, so I decided to buy another gun. (Plus it's just an excuse to buy another gun, you guys know how it is haha) Tonight I bought a used Savage 110 .270 for $275. It is a bolt action. I personally thought it was a good deal, what do you guys think? The gun is in very nice condition, it didn't come with a scope but thats ok, I'll get one here soon. I'll let you all know how it shoots once I get a chance to take it out.

First let me welcome you to the HIGHROAD.

In mine and many others opinions you have purchased a fine rifle in a great deer hunting calibur. Chances are it will be a great shooter.

If you like the trigger, it will be fine.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. BTW, welcome to the .270 club. :D

98firebird - Welcome to The High Road! Lots of great experience here.

I bet you will like your .270 Savage. Sounds like a good deal. You can do pretty much anything a rifle can do with your new rifle. If you have the means and the space to get into reloading, do it so you can learn more about your new rifle's capabilities.

Most new rifles save costs by not installing sights, so you are ahead of the game with your un-scoped Savage - which I assume has decent iron sights.

IMHO - When you get to the scope installation, be sure to keep the iron sights on the rifle.

Avoid the "peep-through" rings - which force you to give up your cheek weld - Look into the various setups where you can take the scope on and off while maintaining the scope's "zero". Leupold and others have systems for this.

Keep shooting that 30-30 too! Great rifle to carry when you are still hunting in the brush or pushing deer to your friends in your stands.

Again -- welcome to THR!
