Hi guys,

Yesterday, I loaded a couple of hundred rounds of 9mm for a trip to the range this morning.

I had a couple of boxes of Federal SP primers left from years past, so I decided to use them up.

99.9999% of the time I use WSP, never a problem, glass smooth feeding and they go bang every time.

The Federals all fed fine, but the force required to seat them was MUCH more than Win primers, kinda like... PUSH...PUSH HARDER... SEAT with a snap. Is this unusual with Fed SP primers ? The 550B is fine, I ran a tube of WSP thru it just to make sure I wasn't experiencing a problem and they fed and seated glass smooth as always.

I know Fed primers are 'softer' than other brands, so I was expecting one to pop at any minute, but none did.

I examined each round afterward, the primers all seated properly, with no dents, high primers or uneven seating.

Am I so used to WSP primers that the Federals just seem to require more force to seat ?

Thanks for the info...

I load .38 Special with Federal primers, more sensitive for limber spring DA revolvers. I just shifted .38 loading from my old CH to the 550 and had no problems or difference in feel when loading Federal primers instead of the 9mm/Winchester setup the day before.

i just mostly federal primers. occasionally win LP. never noticed a difference in feel.

that's kind of bizarre. do they mic different diameters?

maybe try a different lot of federal sp?

I use Federal primers for my h/guns as the hammer drop of a tuned revolver is a bit on the light side to offer one 5.5 lbs trigger pull.

On 9X19 or 45ACP I use anything & actually prefer CCI, Winchester of the few Remingtons I can obtain. For the hammer drop of a semi-auto is a heavy drop be the gun a 2.5 or 6 lbs.

Althought CCI primers are notorious for being on the large size, I have not had probs with loading them in a 550. I use FED 150's for the 45acp, and they flow like water!
