Never. They have to prove that you dont own it,not the other way around.

Unfortunately that's not the way it works, especially when the gun is lost or stolen.

i have copies that stay with originals in safe, copies that are carried in the case when transporting the guns, and scans of the originals emailed to myself.

i dont want to take any chances especially in california.

No receipts, but I keep copies of my MD State police applications (can't think of the form name) handy. That's good enough.

I SCAN them using 300 DPI to a pdf file. This is way overkill for a document but you can see every little detail and can reproduce a beautiful replica.

I then encrypt the scanned image so nobody can copy the file and do anything useful with it.

The original receipt gets shredded.

I have a folder where I keep all of my scanned-encrypted documents (not just gun receipts) and I do backups regularly.

I keep the receipts of the guns I've bought through FFL dealers, but for no real reason.
I don't give or do I want a receipt, or any information, from an individual when buying or selling a gun.

The only time I've ever been asked about my gun ownership is when a police detective, 1,400 miles away, call and asked about a 45 I had owned being used in a killing. A ten minute talk, mostly shooting the breeze, was the end of it.

I keep EVERYTHING that is associated with the gun and the receipts surrounding it. All my boxes, manuals, warning papers, receipts, all of it; locked away safely in my safe. I am not sure why though, but it certainly is not hurting anything...

If your gun is stolen and recovered, you will have to provide the police with proof of ownership to get it back. I copy them, as the original heat transfer paper will fade quickly. I staple them to the original and leave them in the safe with the guns. One of my guns was stolen by a supposed friend, who was caught carrying it illegally. It was a pain to get it back, and without proof of ownership it would have been impossible. Never again, all guns not in use stay in the safe, only my wife and I have the combo. :)

Simple and fireproof: I keep the receipt. I also keep a list of firearm model/description, vendor, purchase date, price paid, serial number, etc. on a Word document.

I e-mail the list to myself on an internet e-mail account after each update. That way, even if the PC and printed list go up in flames, I can access the list from the e-mail account from anywhere in the world.

Of course, the NSA is likely reading my list right now
